Why do we bog down our server and hinder its performance by keeping 100's of thousands of posts in an archive when nobody bothers to use it.

it would be a useful feature if people used it,but since they don't it is a bit pointless 65% of your db being taken up by information nobody ever looks at.

Does that mean you're going to remove the archived posts and thereby lose a lot of posts to which a lot of us do refer? I mean, why not remove posts that are older than a specific date? That way the more recent topics will still be available and the database will get smaller, which should make searching more effective and faster.

I rarely browse through the archives, but it happens. If Im searching for a specific topic and I cannot find it in the open forums, I'll search the archives.
I find the archives a good way keep old info around. However, if that info is out-of-date, it is only taking up space.
The only way to make use of the archive is to tell people to look/search in the archives, as it is a lot simpler to ask for help .I know a support forum were you get your *ss flamed if you ask for something which already have been answered. Something which never happens here.

Well, that doesn't work either, we are constantly telling people to use the search, but people just don't, it accounts for only about 0.5% of the pages viewed, so is not being used, except possibly by the half dozen people who have posted here.

I`am using the archives, too. It`s a good resource to find some answers. But I think, that normals users don`t bother to use it or use the search at all, cause it is easier to ask that question in the forums again. Normal process in the web.

I think the acrhive feature is useful. As others have posted, I search there when I'm looking for something that I cannot find on the live posts. Doesn't happen too often, but when I need the archive is invaluable. I'd also like to point out that many, many bug fixes are archived and they have not seen their way to the current code, so without archive, you'd just lose them...

I half agree and disagree. There are quite a few archived posts with fixes in them that are still useful, but on the whole most of the archive is not used. What would be nice (but would be a major undertaking) is to solicit the most common archived topics that help people refer to and then create some FAQs about those topics. The archives could then be deleted.

I agree with Nikkol.
There are two dozen or so archived topics that should be easily accessible to people on this forum.
I don't use search that much because it is very hard to find what I am looking for - combining the right keyword, the right forum, etc. (and not being too general or the page will timeout)
I have often thought that a forum with sticky links to frequently asked questions (like Hot Topic, Hide Email, etc.) could reduce postings to this forum drastically.
If you put a link to 1 answer to Hot Topic then you can delete the other 1,000 or so answering the same question.

You could always try the new search engine I posted, it won't time out regardless of what you search for.

I am not sure I would ever use the archive feature on a forum I run but I would hate to see some of the older posts, especially in the MOD forums, go away. They are an excellent resource. However there are certainly a lot of posts that don't need to be saved. I trim the fat occassionally.

I must've missed that post then... Could you give the URL again?
