I put up my site like a little portal that takes news from the forum (used by our writers to send the articles, FROM HOME!), and displays them on the page, and every news item can then be read in a standalone page or viewed with all the news in that category (by date..)...

Can we take a look?

Rob and others,

We have been working real hard getting this MOD working and I just wanted to say, "Thank you for all your help and for a great MOD." We were using Newspro.pl for this but had to have yet another mail program to send out notices of updates to the news. We were looking for a Snitz MOD to take it's place, so that we sould use our "already configured" jmail.

If you want to take a look, you can see it at

http://www.thedaggers.net

I will be implimenting your MOD on several other sites.

One other "idea" - help me to see if this will work or not:

Since the "contentdisplay_editor" only provides parameters and the "content.asp" is left untouched - Why couldn't we make several copies of the "content.asp" and name them "content1.asp", "content2.asp", etc. Each of these could be set up to provide various display options with differing color combinations, fonts, etc. They they could be called with an INCLUDE accordingly. That way you could display many "types" of information on the same page.

What do you think? Possible?

Shep

Thanks again

Folks I need your help.

I have one site working as stated in a previous post, but here is the rub. It took me forever to resolve the LINK CONFLICTS when your "Index.asp" is let's say one or 2 directories up from your "forum" directory. When you put in your "inc_top" statement in the "index.asp - the links assume that everything is in the same directory, thus it can't find the /cgi-bin/forum/pop_profile.asp?mode=Edit - etc. (2 steps down from the index.asp)

The only way I figured to fix this was to put the forum/*.asp files in the same directory with the index.asp. This really only affects index.asp becasue I can move the other files into the /cgi_bin/forum directory - but my domain name points to the other directory and I would like to keep the index.asp in that directory.

Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Shep

Hi Stupidity,

I'm Still working on your request...

Jumpingflash .. glad you worked it out!

Shep,

Thanks for kind words. As to your link problems with changed directories... I have to think about this. The forum is coded with a specific directory structure in mind.... everything in one directory!!! (except some images...) I'll get back to you on this...

Rob,

Great mod!! Can an option be added that will strip out images. When an image is included in the post it really messes up the layout of the content page.

If you want your images to be shown a bit better with the text, try to abilitate HTML code in messages, and use align="left" (or right) tag inside the <img src="xxxxxxxx" align="left">.

This is the site I am using this mod on. I am personalizing the display modes to my needs, and I must say it is VERY flexible.

It is still REALLY work in progress, in its early stage, but in a week or so many links will be active and we will have REAL news... (this is just to show how it works).

Rob, your creature is great !!!

Thanx.

Thanks jumping flash...

BTW, VERY stylish site. Totally kewl... e Italiano!

Can't wait to see the finished site!

dssww,

To a certain degree, how the image processing works for images within a message, will depend on what function is used to process the message. Originally, I used ChkString function which was a little safer but images were still displayed (links didn't work though). The FormatStr function displays links and smilies properly. I left the original ChkString function, commented out, in the code if you want to edit the file. However this will not solve the problem of having a column that you've formated to be 250 pixels wide and someone sticking a 400 pixel image in a post!

The answer is to have a function that totally removes images, (add this to the inc_function.asp file), and create a modified version of a DisplayMode that uses that function to display the message. A worthwhile addition...now if I could just find the time....

Hi Rob how's it coming, if it's causing to much of a problem let me know and I'll hard code the links onto the pages

If you want a quick look at how I've been using the MOD have look at http://www.thegaytoursite.com You have to register to get the members menu, still needs some fine tuning and some of the features have been "borrowed"

We are populating the forums over the next few days before advertising it's existance

Hey Stupidity,

Well... yes I have been working on it... sort-of!

You know how "one thing leads into another"...

So, I started on your problem and ran into some other base problems...realizing some of the limitations (serious limitations) of using either the CheckString or FormatString functions. So I'm working on a a couple of new functions. One that removes ALL forum and html code plus deals with quotation marks and certain other characters. This will be used to display the headers for links (T_SubJect). Then I'm working on one that will deal with images, smilies etc, but leave some general html stuff alone -- like links. This would be used for the content (T_MESSAGE) for certain display modes.

Be back to you soon...

Rob, that would be great for me to, as leaving out the images in the "preview" modes I set up in Display Mode would be great, to then make the images available again when the user wants to read the WHOLE message, with bells and whistles....

And I was having the same problem as one of the people above (sorry if I don't remeber the name!) : I had to put the pages i wanted the content to be written on, into the forum directory otherwise I could not see any data (and it gave me any type of errors). Now I would like to make the posts on the REAL forum (not the one i use for articles) visible on my first page, but of course the forum is in another directory, and I cannot seem to make it show things on the page.
How can I do that ? It seems like it looks for the database in the directory of the page that is requesting the data, and not in the forum's directory.... (that's why I had to move everything in the ARTICLEforum's dir)

Any help would be REALLY appreciated (anyway ROB the site is growing slowly, and tell me if you like how it is getting....)

Thanx,

Jumping.

Hi Jumping take a look at this site http://www.thegaytoursite.com (it's ok nothing really graphical) if you visit some of the pages i.e. default home page, blackpool, etc you will see how I implimented Rob's MOD and take input from various forums (from the forums directory) and display it throughout the site I did this by placing the following includes at the top of each page

<!-- #INCLUDE VIRTUAL="/forum/config.asp" -->
<!-- #INCLUDE VIRTUAL="/forum/inc_functions.asp" -->
<!-- #INCLUDE VIRTUAL="inc_top1.asp" -->(my own version of inc_top)
<!-- #INCLUDE VIRTUAL="/forum/content.asp" -->

let me know if this helps or you want anything else

Hi again to you all.... I was wondering : the contentDisplay options let you see posts sorted by date, n. of read, etc... But would it be possible to, say, display the last 10 posts by sate and then put a link for the second 10, then the 3rd 10... Or divide them by week... Maybe I am asking for something stupid but I was wondering how you could do that.
Thanx Stupidity for your help, but it does not seem to work with me (anyway using access version of the MOD).

Thanx to whoever will answer !
