quote: you're essentially saying that all Nigerians are disruptive
No I'm not. You're putting words in my mouth and thoughts in my head. I'm saying that the IPs in Nigeria are disruptive to my forum, I have no idea what race is behind them causing trouble.
Let's forget about Nigeria. What if I ban US IPs? Am I racist? If so, against what race? |

Though not popular I would have to agree with bobby131313. Well, at least in part. The best security is to close all of the doors and then loosen on security on an individual basis. Look at allowing HTML. Banning HTML from all people ... is that prejudice or is it safe? Well, HTML is a programming language and not a people, but if a market is within an area that you are not targeting and that area is known for causing more problems than help, then it would be safe to just allow users in on an individual basis.
So, the part in which I agree with bobby131313 is that banning entire area to make it safe is good, but I don't agree with barring the entire area without allowing a process for appeal. That shows insensitivity towards the good people.
bobby131313, if you were to provide an appeal process and state that due to the high problem area within that country that each member is accepted on case by case basis, then that would be safe and also fair.
I think people from troubled areas understand that their countrymen cause trouble. You should reward those who truly are trying to do the right thing. You could place people from those countries on probation or whatever. True this is more work for you but it is causes less heat also. |

I'll make the final stand in this:
No matter where you ban or block, "if I intend to distrupt you, I will and sooo easily". So banning is never a solution, nor you are making them uncomfortable. It happens to other users who have no intention to disrupt you but only unlucky to be in the area you have banned.
When I see Turkey IP's banned from somewhere, I first particularly don't think they are racist "only" but that's only because I'm in this business over 15 years and know what possibilities might had happen but I'm not an avarage Joe that has no idea about that. Highest I think is a grudge or past disruptions. However, I still get there no matter which IP's get banned. So that's not a solution other than making discomfortable idea about the administration of the site against the area or people.
90% of human (not bot) interrupters can be gained as good users and visitors if you don't act back but try to talk with them. Bots can only use a few places and it is almost as easy to handle them.
Ofcourse, if your site has particular profile, you may as well do anything you like. But if you want to hold a more colorful and large community, you don't have luxuries to spank them.
