Well, I'm off to spend the morning with Auntie Google this morning in an attempt to find some sort of system that would allow people to track a GPS signal online for a shipping agency we're building a website for at the moment. Not really sure where to start looking, though - I'm sure the likes of DHL and UPS have their own, custom-built systems - so any leads on this would be appreciated. I'm not looking for any concrete solutions just yet, all I need to know is the basics like:
- Is it possible without them changing their existing GPS system? - What sort of software (and how much it costs) do I need on the server? - What's involved in programming the website?

Hi Shaggy,
I did something like that, and there are Web Applications that does just that.
firstly, you need 2 basic things:
1. Send the GPS String containing all data to the web, so... web connection in all gps devices and a little program that should send the string every n minutes.
2. the receiver in the web... C# VB ASP PHP Ruby whatever that gets the string and decoded to ... maybe Google Maps position. It's easy!
I just love this mashup gps tracking applications so you can give it a try: http://www.freshlogicstudios.com/Products/Atlas/GpsDemo.aspx
about the GPS string, no matter what device is ... it always throw you almost the same data here is a good article to start with (and the one I started with)
other article that you can follow if using .NET is this one
but there are soooo many device tracking system, I don't know what you really want, tracking packages? tracking vehicles? tracking persons?
specify and I will help you a little more

Thanks, Bruno
Found the Fresh Logic one with my search. Haven't had a proper look at it yet but, at first glance, would I be correct in assuming that everything is dome through their website? I.E., I can't place it on the client's site?
Been looking at this one for most of the morning which seems to be perfect (with the added bonus of a Snitz forum! ) but the pricing may put the client off. What they need to be able to do is provide their clients with the ability to track their deliveries so each truck is going to need its own user account.
