Eh, I figure I'll at least get an estimate of what this could cost. If it's too expensive, I'll drop it. But if the cost is reasonable, I'm open to the option. |

Using a script like the one you're suggesting will filter out the word I highlighted above.

Search is your friend “I was having a mildly paranoid day, mostly due to the fact that the mad priest lady from over the river had taken to nailing weasels to my front door again.” |

Which is what prompted my earlier comment - filtering text is very difficult. It is much easier to find some more Moderators and make sure there is a more constant online presence - and one that deals swiftly with junk like that.
You could try any of a multitude of ideas like something with RegEx - but its just not that hard to circumvent. Not to mention issues with false-positives as Shaggy just pointed out. I think you will find that most (if not all) of you good coders recognize that there are just some practical limitations to what you can do with this.... and for the record, I'm one of them.
I really would love to help, but this just isn't a feasible request. |

The peurile nonsense website b3ta.com is an obvious magnet for swearing, and did try implementing several generations of swear filtering - but fact is it's near-impossible to do, and they gave up. On this site, however, we very rarely get any swearing, and the community self-moderates to a degree - and the mods and admins are always ready to keep the place clean and tidy and explain to swearers why we don't like it - perhaps promote a couple more sensible users into mods, with the specific aim of keepiong the boards tidy, they may step up to the game? |
