Hello
This is a great forum and I would love if it was released in PHP for UNIX.
Does anyone know a similar free forum to this in PHP? |

but is only supported on MySQL databases.
another php based forum I would recommend is phpBB which supports a multitude of database types and has a very good community for support and customizations. |

Is that really a limitation though ? Most servers that support PHP are your typical LAMP or WAMP setup anyway aren't they ? |

Not sure if it is "typical" but my feelings is that there should not be a restriction or limitation as to the database backend. I've been using a lot of PHP on a Windows Server lately with a SQL Server backend and wouldn't want it any other way. Besides, for a PHP forum there are not a lot of people familiar with MySQL, phpBB supports a MS Access database (as well as many others) that I feel most individuals would be able to easily support and administer. |

I think the SMF attitude is "GPL all the way". I can see your point entirely, but why have a GPL application like SMF on top of a proprietry database like SQL Server ?
... and don't get me started on Access as a "proper database"
But anyway, I've answered the original question |

To have the performance, reliability and all the benefits of the tools that come with SQL Server and that are second to none? |

never said it was a proper database, but it is a database that is extremely intuitive and robust enough for most novice programmers and power users. |

ROFL!!! ... I would use Oracle if I wanted those features, but why doesn't Snitz support that ... hmmm !!!
You choose to ignore the main criteria that I posted about --> GPL |

Well, preferences are preferences. I would never, ever, use Oracle if I had the option to use SQL Server. There is a world of difference in usability, programmability, ease of management ... and I could go on. But that's just MVHO.
The fact is that there are GPL products who use SQL Server. There is even a library to use SQL Server, programatically, from Linux. I don't see any contradiction in that. |

Is there a way to modify Snitz access tables of an existing forum to then be continued in phpBB? |

You'll need to ask that over in their support forums.
