I read gmail's help files and it said it blocked ads on emails with catastrophic news. So I tested it and sent myself the mesage "I'm sorry to tell you that Aunt Sue was killed last night in a tragic dishwasher accident." and it really did block any ads from displaying. That's so kind of them, the last thing I wanted to see was an ad for a dishwasher at that point.

although a funeral parlour advert may have been useful?

I can see adding a key phrase to each email to suppress advertising could become the next big googlewhack-type game...
