I have a new Dell that I got a few months ago. It's a 3.0 with a Gig of RAM and a 160 GB HD.

I have XP home with SP2.

When I first got it I would open any application, like Word and it was almost instant. Over the past few months that I;ve had it it seemed to open slower.

I have Norton installed and run the virus checker regularly, I also run Spybot and Ad-aware weekly.

What can the the cause of this slow down?

Could be a few things, I'd do a disk defrag for starters, and also look into perhaps resetting up the prefetch folder in windows as well.

del c:\windows\prefetch\*.*

More info on what prefetcher is and how it works here http://www.uninets.net/~blaisdel/whistler6.htm#prefetcher

from experience, PC's love being rebuilt every 3-6 months. I guess something installed is slowing everything up :(

Could it be something like the pagefile having to cache to disk a lot (maybe you've got something eating up your RAM?)

Really hard to tell without the box right in front of you - maybe some of the 'pc tuning apps' you get on magazine coverdisks/downloads could help?
