Wow, I never expected this level of debate, I was just curious. I didn't see the angle of the favorite browser based on being a web developer, since I am not and just a casual browser. I can see that you guys have your hands full.
I like IE, and I don't begrudge MS for all the money they make or the strong ties IE has to Windows, I think that too is brilliant. By the way I have no stock in any company, including MS.
I like IE, I really liked the tabbed interface I get with Maxthon. For me it does all that I need, and since it is IE, I still get all of those conveniences too. As I mentioned I need the Google toolbar, if I'm going to surf, then I need to be able to Google. And since I can't spell at all, I really need my ieSpell plugin in. I have a few others, but I think you can add just about anything you like. And it's free too.
Thanks for all the terrific responses. |

This isn't true at all, it predominatly fails because IE doesn't even try to support a large set of the CSS2 spec.
Here is CSS support history that shows which parts of the CSS spec each browser even trys to support. Spacifically of interest are IEs support (or non support) of slectors and psudo classes/elements.

well we could argue the toss all night, since I could post a few links to pages in the same site where IE supports more CSS items than the others, plus if you look at HTML support too, IE leaves the others well behind. |

IE may have had better support for HTML and CSS three years ago when it was released. But the others have progressed, IE has not. As a result IE has been left behind.
Microsoft should be a leader in this area, not a follower. It was their leadership in the 1990s that earned them 94% market share. But since then . . . nothing. |

I use IE, pages just look and load better. I do have FireFox, Opera, Mozilla and Netscape installed, but just for testing my sites. |

A) I've been visiting slashdot daily for a year and half with firefox and have had no problem whatsoever
B) Slashdot doesn't use CSS |

well I never - OK so they don't use CSS, never mind - the principle is that for me, using firefox to view a thread on /., the page munges, but with ie, all is well... so
A) Oh, good. We must have different versions? Mine is 0.9.3 for windows. B) Oh, whatever. Firefox will not render it nicely for me, and it's all me, me, me! |

Mine is also 0.9.3 for windows.
Slashdot, of all the sights on the internet, probably has 30% or more vistors using firefox. So if there were any problems they would have gotten fixed years ago. |

I like Firefox myself, I love the speed of it and the way it is not so integrated into the OS (if you are on PC).
One thing about MSIE, lots of sites are purposefully designed to look OK only in IE (usually down to the designer and the person he is designing for) and look terrible in other browsers. I think this outlook is changing and more browser platforms help this along.
I help quite a few people in my local area with computer troubles and let them try out FireFox. Out of around 20 or so of my friends and clients, only one went back (and got all the 'coolwebsearch' crap installed again somehow).
Choice is good in all respects, and everyone has their favourite software.
P.S there is a nice extension for Firefox (IMHO worth having even if you don't use the browser for 'browsing' just testing stuff).

Slashdot does have problems (I think all versions of slashcode have) and the community is trying to get Cmdr. Taco (owner of site) to 'fix'.
Some people over on alistapart [http://www.alistapart.com/articles/slashdot/] have done some work with CSS.
'Munging' problem has interesting cause iirc, but cured by refresh in FF. |

I also like firefox, it is the best alternative to IE there has ever been, but it still has some quirks. I love the dev extensions, they are very useful when laying out a site and it does not require much work to make a site look & work correctly in both IE and FF (unlike most of it's predecessors).FF may support more CSS, but IE supports more of the HTML standard, so you can't say that FF is a more standards compatible browser. Another point worth noting is that MS have reformed the browser development team, which was broken up a couple of years ago, so I would expect a new version of the browser is in the pipeline at some point.
Other than a little quirk noted below, this site should work fine in FF and IE http://shealth.dipex.org if anyone can see any major probs in either could they let me know, it is going live on monday and would especially like FF users to test it out.
quirk look at the quicksearchbox on the right hand side, it is impossible to get the input box and the graphic to line up in FF |
