I am putting this here because I just spent the last 3 hours trying to uninstall NIS 2002, and because others may have (had) this problem. If this shouldn't be here, disregard/lock/delete it plz
Today, my computer suddenly started blocking all internet connections... I was still able to view some pages, like the Snitz start page, but refreshing didn't work, and later I found out it was the cached forum.snitz.com that was on my screen. I knew of other people who had had this problem, and there was no doubt it was a NIS problem. I opened the program, but it said it was disabled. When I wanted to go into the program's options, it told me I wasn't on the Supervisor account... As far as I knew there were no accounts in the version I had installed, so I had no idea what to do. I tried a lot of different things, like switching to another windows user account, removing NIS completely, but nothing would work.
Luckily we have 2 computers here, so I got on the other one and went to the Symantec support website. There were all kinds of instructions there for fixing the problem I was having, but how is one supposed to ever get to the support website if you can't get on the internet in the first place and don't have another pc at your disposal??
The support website instructed me to go into windows safe mode, and uninstall nisum.dat - I did this, but the problem was still there. I looked a little more on the support website, and then read the suggestion of using the 'RnisUPG.exe' removal Utility, but again - How is one supposed to get this on a computer if all internet connections are blocked?? (I know, cd-rom or floppy, but suppose for the moment you don't have that option).
Finally I decided to try disabling the loading of the Symantec Corporation services at the pc startup (Start -> Execute -> msconfig -> Services -> Disable Symantec Corporation components), in the hope that it would allow me to uninstall the program, and sure enough it did
The support Symantec offers obviously didn't work for me, and I have had problems with their software in the past, so I uninstalled everything and I will definetely use other Anti-Virus/Internet Security programs in the future |

I feel your pain, man
Just a top tip - when testing an internet connection, always use something like http://www.theregister.co.uk or http://news.bbc.co.uk - basically a site that you'll instantly realise is cached as the articles will be out-of-date. Both those sites post several/many articles an hour in the UK, I'm sure you'll find local ones, too :) |
