Darn, this thread did get totally hijacked. Anyone have an answer to the original question, which was a good tool to use for 3d text effects?

Hey, I just thought of the BEST free image editor invented ever !!! .... The Gimp - originally designed for *nix, but now available on Windows. It is VERY technical, almost to PhotoShop level and is distributed under the GNU.

Most, if not all companies let you do a trial of their software. Just download a few different applications and see which one suits you best. Then get that.

Hmm, I just took a look at Xara. I gotta say, I like it. Lofty, is there a reason you seemed to not want to look at it?

Yeah, Gimp is very nice. For image creation I either use Fireworks or Gimp.
For other stuff (converting etc.) I use Xnview.
