How would I send a command to another user on a network through MOS-DOS? I used to know it but i forgot it. When you're in DOS does it matter what path it's set to? (we have C:\ A:\ F:\ G:\ H:\ S:\ and Z:\) |

uh maybe, I'm not really sure when it comes to DOS. Does NetSend do what I was talking about? I need to send a message not to the whole network, but only to a specific username. |

Go to a command prompt and write : 'NET /?' to see your choices. |

net send username message
This should send a message, not a command, to the other computer as a Messenger Service message on Win2k and XP. |

bookie- so if i type net send <username> <message> then that will send it to that username only right? (its on the school network, using novell login)
when i typed it though, nothing happened i got this error in return:
G:\>net send grebush hi An error occured while sending a message to GREBUSH. The message alias could not be found on the network. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2273
Does this mean that I'm trying to access the wrong path? we have C:\ A:\ F:\ G:\ H:\ S:\ and Z:\ to choose from...but i've tried using all of them and i get the same error msg every time.
PS we cant use msn or yahoo or any chat program either... |

The path doesn't matter at all. Maybe the problem is that you had to enclose the message between quotation marks, that is: net send grebush "hi"
Try this and see if it works. |

Is grebush the user logged into the computer? You could also use the name of the computer as well as the IP address. What you typed should have sent the message unless that person isn't logged in or they have the Messenger Service turned off. There could be some other reasons too but those are the only ones I can think of. You don't need quotes, by the way. |

When you say novell login, do you mean Novell Netware? If so try this, if I recall my netware commands correctly, I think it is:
Send "<msg>" to "<user|group>"
This will work as long as Netware's public folder is in the path, usually maps to Z:

Yes Bookie, grebush is the user that I'm trying to send the message to, he sits across the room from me in my computer class. So I know he's logged on. How do they find out if the have the messenger service turned off or not? I'll try using the name of the computer or the IP addy if what nat said doesn't work. Nat- so I'd input something like this
Z:\>Send "hi" to "grebush" or do I need he group too? which is MS_H1 or somethin like that, I'll find out tomorrow for sure. Oh, forgot to mention that yes, the client we use to login is Novell Netware |

No you don't need the group. it's either user or group, and of course sending to group would send the message to all users logged in belonging to that group. If you issue the command "send /h" or "send /?" it will give you syntax help.
Been a while since I worked with Netware, might be a little rusty right now....
cheers, Nat

I couldn't get any of those commands to work :( so I just got a chat program and hid it in the Shared drives so everyone that knew where it was could access it.
Another DOS question though, How do I delete a Folder from DOS? Not just files, I know how to do that (del filename), but if you put in the folder name it just deleted all the folers inside of it. A friend said to try deltree but that didnt work. I tried the help command in DOS but it didn't turn up anything that I could use (or knew how to). Any help if appreciated. Thanks |
