Does anyone know how to "sneak" into the Registry? I am using W2K on a corporate PC. They sent an update last week that took out the option to get at the registry.
Can I do a safe mode start and edit it? All I want to do is enable the screen saver option. They have it set to the network log-on screen. I want to use Web Shots instead.
Thanks. |

You've got Regedit and REGEDT32, and ofcourse ; Use at your own risk! Make a backup before you edit something (File - Export in REGEDT32) But, you will need to have the appropriate priviliges!
If you are on an Active Directory environment I recon they've used so called Policies ; these policies overrule the local settings in most cases, so you will have a real challenge in overriding them (permanently).... |

Thanks marcelgoertz, but that is the problem. Maybe I didn't describe it well. I can't use the registry editing that way, it has been disabled by the system administrator is the message i get. |

If you know the administrator credentials you can just log in locally to the machine instead of to the domain and change things that way. |

Thanks Gremlin, Unfortunately it isn't that easy here. We have a LAN of 20,000+ terminals. They would never let me know what those credentials are. The manage them by user and will not allow anyone outside of IS to have them. That's why I was wondering if there was a way to sneak into it. I only wanted to make the changes to release the lock on the screen saver settings.
It's far from important, I was just curious.
Thanks for the suggestions. |

Just a thought, but if they wanted you to be able to change the screen saver, they would have given you access to do that. If I were you, I would request from IS to have access to do that, rather than risk being fired. |

Most likely they are using Group Policy to control the screensaver option. Editing the Registry won't allow you to change the settings. We just implemented this at the company I work at recently, using the Default Windows Logon screensaver and have it set to lock the computer after 15 minutes if inactivity. Webshots is . Do you really feel that using webshots is worth losing your job over? I know where I work, if people try to circumvent the controls put in place, they risk losing their job. |

Points well taken from Nikkol and Richard. I'll leave it alone. The risk of being fired is not an issue, the worst that would happen is they rebuild the PC. Either way I'll keep it as is. Thanks for the advice. |
