Yes, that's so weird. April is name of the girl and at the same time April's fools. Hmm, we'll see if it was a joke or not. |

From what I've read in the popular press, Google retains your email even if you close the account and delete the email. Based on the content in email, they've almost got a screenshot of your life on a hard disk somewhere. |

This is what creeps me out about Gmail. Can you imagine your email being Googled?
You send an email to your friend about birthday gift advice for your wife, and there next to your friend's response are a bunch of ads for jewelry, perfume, flowers, Hallmark cards, etc.
Talk presidential politics with friends using Gmail and donation ads for Bush or Kerry come up!

It is a spooky thought, even if it's automated. Maybe I do not want to know what ads it will serve up! |

There's got to be some sort of trade off with 1GB of space: either you're going to pay for it with $$ or you're going to have to deal with the ads. I don't really think there are any privacy issues any different than what we experience sending e-mail and browsing the web right now. If someone wants to read my e-mail, they can do it without Google's help. I'm not worried. |

LOL Huwr!!!
I'm not too worried either about the privacy thing. Maybe if I was sending top company secret information to a co-worker/president or emaling sensitive information, then I would. Then I again, I wouldn't use gmail to send that kind of stuff.
Basically, I trust google. They have a good reputation when it comes to being the best search engine among other things. Not to mention, I love the google news. They are the best at what they do. If not #1, they are in the top 3.
If they were not a well known company, I wouldn't trust them either. I admit, I won't be the first in line to sign up. I'll wait a while and see how the service stands up before signing up. But that's just smart thinking when it comes to new services or software.

I have no problem with them being the best search engine, but with todays proliferation of spam, I think it is completely irresponsible of them to start up a free mail service, what sort of people do the really expect to use it! |

That would be my guess. I know quite a few users that already use hotmail or another free service to sign up to my forums and its got me beat as to why when you tell them you will not onsell there e-mail address. |
