I saw it early this morning. I'd hope it's not a joke, but it almost sounds too good to be true. How would they pay for it? No advertising banners, no pop-ups, no unsolicited mail from them. I don't get it, oh well, I hope it turns out good. |

quote: Gmail - elaborate hoax? Google announced a new free email service at the end of their West Coast day yesterday, ensuring a media blitz on the holiest of hoaxter holidays - April Fools Day. Is this upcoming service the real deal?
Do you think Gmail is a hoax?
John Battelle said, "...this has got to be an April Fool's Joke. A very believable one, one that in the long run may come true, but a joke."
I'm inclined to think so too, especially considering the tone of the press release, which sounds like an Onion reporter wrote it in a parody Google's loose, freewheeling image.
And then there's the gig of space they claim to offer users - how long would it take before that ocean of email burst from the Google server farm and sank Washington?
Classic Google prank or the next big leap in free email?
Remember, Google is hiring... is this because of their expected increase of work due to handling gMail?

One thing I'm wondering about is if there will be any restrictions on attachment sizes for sending and receiving. |

Sending and storing ISO files would kill your 1 Gig limit |

There will be text ads in the emails.
quote: Are there ads in Gmail?
There are no pop-ups or banner ads in Gmail. Gmail does include relevant text ads that are similar to the ads appearing on the right side of Google search results pages. The matching of ads to content is a completely automated process performed by computers using the same technology that powers the Google AdSense program. This technology already places targeted ads on thousands of sites across the web by quickly analyzing the content of pages and determining which ads are most relevant to them. No humans read your email to target the ads, and no email content or other personally identifiable information is ever provided to advertisers.
And from what I have read, the limit is 10MB per email. |

This is the part that scares me:
"Google's service, called "Gmail," will include a built-in search function that will let people search every e-mail they've ever sent or received."
That's quoted from CNN.com from this morning.

Why does the ability to search your own emails scare you? |

Ahh, it must be an April Fools joke.
If it was true they would have called it Moogle. :p |
