Earlier today I've registered a new domain that is supposed to go with a new site. The plan is simple: do what imood.com does, but do it better.

As many of you will probably know, imood.com lets people register and then gives them some code to put on a site (or in forum signatures) to show the user's current mood. People can change the icon and the mood text through the imood site.
The biggest reason why I don't like imood is because of the extremely ugly and hard to recognise icons. I'm thinking it can be done a whole lot better, so that's what I want to do.

I'm not entirely sure what I want it to become, but right now I don't think I want it to become a huge community with forums, games or whatever else portals have, just a place people can go to to set up an account to get a mood icon. Perhaps over time things can be expanded with forums, but right now I want to keep it as simple as possible, also to cut down on the cost.

There are a few things I need, and I hope you all can help me:
- what kind of icons would you prefer? regular smilies or different faces?
- what size would YOU prefer them to be?
- which moods should the icons show? I'm looking for around 40 to 50 different moods though I know many icons would look a lot alike so not all moods will be used for icons.

Later on I'll probably need some help making the mood icons. Though I like making graphics, those small icons (somewhere between 15x15 pixels and 20x20 pixels) just aren't my thing.
I'll probably also need some help with setting up the database structure and perhaps/probably some SQL codes, which I'm unfortunately still not very good at.

If you can help me (with any of these things), let me know. I'd really appreciate it. There's no rush in getting this done though.

I would imagine this would be pretty simple to implement. You'd probably give the users a unique url for their graphic such as:

<img src="http://www.frutzlesmoodiconplace.com/mood.asp?user=frutzle">

Then the mood.asp page would select the username/ID out of the SQL db and spit out the right image. I don't know if that's what you were thinking of doing but that's what I'd do. (I'm assuming you know you can put a .asp file as an image source.)

If possible, I'd give some texture to the images instead of just a flat smiley face. As far as size, I'd probably make them no larger than 20x20. If possible, I'd give users a choice between different sets of mood icons to choose from so when they choose "bored" it picks it out from their pre-chosen set of mood icons. This would require you to have a lot of icons, though. If you started off simple, you could just create the same icons in different colors just to provide variety. Then you could add sets that are a little more complicated.

I'll offer some more ideas if I think of any.

Hey, I've seen that image before.

I have a large 4in wide x 7in high sheet magnet with those pictures printed on it. Then there's a smaller magnet that's like a green picture frame which reads "Today I Feel". You move it over the picture (thereby "framing it") to let people know how you feel. It's my favorite magnet thing and is right on one of my metal drawers in my cube. The frame is usually stuck on Mischevious, but tends to move up one row to Fustrated. I love it. Oh, by the way, the copyright is 1994 Creative Therapy Associates, Inc (if that matters).

Yeah, it's a common poster/magnet that school counselors have.

Cool, where can I get one shipped to the UK

Anyway...

I was wanting to do some kind of mood thing for my forums a while back, but never got round to sorting something.

I wish I had the skills to make something like this

I was hoping you'd say smilies because faces are extremely difficult to get recognizable in such small dimensions, especially if they have to resemble something

That's the plan, except not a username but userID would be used.

I have a few smilies ready at 20x20, but personally I think they're rather large. I'll post a link to a first setup of the site when I'm both sure about the domain registration, and have the demo site done (just the look though).

As for the different sets of icons... well it's a good idea, but I don't think people want to be smothered with tons of icons to choose from. Generic mood names will be tied to the smilies, but users can enter their own description of the mood.

Thanks for the ideas Bookie & Nikkol

Anyone else have something to add besides about that poster?

Maybe just a choice of words, instead of images/smilies?

Hey, that poster rocks!!

Seriously, getting back to your topic...

Well, what do you think about offering two different sizes of icons for each mood. Give your users the choice.

Col1 - Mood Name
Col2 - 15x15 icon
Col3 - 20x20 icon

In regards to the comment "definately different faces" -- I wonder if he meant different than what imood.com is using. Their icons were kind of square and unappealing. I mean once I saw the actual icons, the "cool" factor dropped a couple of notches.

Good idea. That wouldn't be all that much more work either.

Exactly what I thought too, which is why I decided to start this site

Anyone able to develop a little systray app that will allow you to quickly right click and choose the mood you're in? Then it would update the db automatically instead of having to log into a site and change it.

We invented a mood referencing system at our forum. members can change their mood in their personal settings area. we created icons that we felt describe certain moods. it is different from what is considered standard mood representations but we like it. it shows in topics and active users. Hovering over the mood icon gives a text explanatiion as well.

Sample: (provided someone is visiting forum)
http://www.burningsoulsforum.com/active_users.asp

Somber
Bright
Tenebrous
Burning
Calm
Warm
Compliant
Strong
Pragmatic
Impetuous
Enthusiastic
Ardent
Deep
Covet
Altruistic

I might be able to get someone to make something like that. It'd definitely be a major feature to using the service...
