Could someone brief me on IP Banning? I would like to know what a good range is to ban, what the individual sets of numbers mean and how I can place an IP with an ISP. Thanks.

IP Banning is not all that effective on it's own, for a number of reasons. ISP's such as AOL use a different IP for each hit to your website. A hit includes requests for each image, html pages, or anything else. AOL obviously has a LOT of IP's so it's very difficult to track someone down with this. Many other ISP's will change the IP of their user each time they dial up. Again, difficult to keep one user locked down without banning an entire range of IP's. THe problem with banning an entire range is that you may very well lock out other users. I have been there, and done that. It's a big PITA.

So, what do you do? Supplement IP banning with UserName (login) banning, and cookie banning. If you ban them via their username, it doesn't matter what IP they use. If you stick a "you're banned" cookie on their PC, it doesn't matter what IP they use or whether or not they're logged in. Granted, there are still ways around this - but many folks don't know what they are. A combination is really the most effective solution.

* To place an IP with an ISP, Snitz provides this functionality. As an administrator, you will see a piece of paper with a lightning-bolt on it. Click this, and a pop-up with the IP address of that user (for that post) will display. Click on the IP and a new window will pop up with ISP information. You can click on IP's in the user profile while editing a user as well.

* I've banned users via IIS before, and it sucks. Total pain in the butt (see my first couple of paragraphs). I suggest using IPGate (a mod for Snitz). It's fairly easy to install and works well. It includes banning by IP, username, and cookies. I've only banned 3 users in over 3 years...the first two were with IIS alone (IP banning) and it was a pain. The 3rd was with IPGate, and my life is much more pleasant because of it.

G'luck...

That is what I was planning on doing.

I knew about how to get an IP just not how to place it. Thanks.
