I was wondering if anyone here uses these two programs by Visualware
eMailTrackerPro enables you to track Internet emails back to the sender! (it installs an Outlook plugin in Outlook 2000 -- or newer -- that'll allow you to trace emails by clicking on a new button, or you can always copy an email's headers and paste them in eMailTrackerPro)
VisualRoute Personal Edition (also available as server edition) combines essential networking utilities -- ping, Whois, traceroute and reverse DNS -- to determine precisely where and how traffic is flowing on an Internet connection, providing a geographical map of the route, and the performance of each segment of the route.
I have them both and really like them. I see it more as a toy than something I really need, athough it is great to see where your site's visitors come from and to check where all those spam emails are coming from (also if any header lines have been spoofed). |

eMailTrackerPro is really nice, but I wouldn't have bought it as a stand-alone product. The non-zoomable map and lack of location information, which you do get with VisualRoute are kind of a let-down. However, thanks to the integration with VisualRoute (so you can zoom into the map and get a more accurate location than for example "america's") make it a nice program to buy together with VisualRoute, also because it then only costs $19.95 instead of $29.95. |

I have visual route installed on one of my servers, I don't use it that much, but have found it very useful when clients complain about slow connections |

Visual route I've used too, for tracking emails I usually just use the header info myself and go from there.
You can also use the visual route java app online too http://visualroute.visualware.com/ easier than using the local windows client sometimes imo if your just trying to see if somethings working or not.

I've tried that a few times, but it never made a lot of sense to me. I read a tutorial on it earlier today though and I finally understand most of it. I'm lazy though, so I prefer a program to do the tracking for me

True, but on some of the demos not all functions work, like getting whois information with IP addresses/hosts. Also it's happened a couple times that the VisualRoute server I had bookmarked (Dulles, VA)didn't work, by the time I'd gotten to another I could've finished the trace using the app on my computer.
Stupid question probably, but if I were to do a trace using one of those demos to check a site that won't work for me, will it give the same results as when I'd do the trace locally? I mean, if there's a network problem somewhere between my computer and the site's server, that doesn't necessarilly mean it has to be there between another server (say, one in the US) and the site's server, right? |

Correct yes, chances are the route between you and the server is going to be very different between one of the online ones and the server. If the problem is however close to the destination server your tracing, then you may find the results are the same. |

Thought so. Thanks again Gremlin
But I guess using the command prompt to do a trace comes down to the same thing as using software like VisualRoute, except the added benefit of an easier interface (yay, copy and paste of IP addresses), extra information, and more options that you get when you use VisualRoute.
Oh Dayve, what's the URL for NeoTrace? When I tried neotrace.com I ended up at McAffee.com but then didn't find any information about trace software, or is it bundled with one of their products? |

Did you know you can cut and paste in a command prompt window as well ?
Click the little "C:\" icon top left of the command window and have a look under the edit menu :) |
