Maybe that's why they get paid so much. Contracts might say (I'm only guessing here) that the artist has to make an X number of CDs over the following Y number of years. The artist'll get paid an N amount of money for his/her work, but all money made in sales, radio broadcasts, tours etc. etc. will go to the record company.
Often when you see compilation CDs, like the recently released Aerosmith album (can't remember the title), they have copyrights of two or three record companies on/in the booklets. The artist/band switched somewhere along the line, but obviously the record companies owned the copyright of the songs. That's smart though 'cause record labels can then re-release old songs and only make money. The artist was paid for his/her work years earlier.
Does this, assuming I'm right, mean artists are mistreated? I don't think so. They sign contracts out of their own free will. If they want more money, they should make sure it's in the contract. If they want a percentage of the profit, they should have it put in the contact. |
