the Startup menu?
This habit of RealPlayer is a real dealbreaker for me. I actually do NOT listen to .rm files (or any other Real formats, whatever they are) specifically because I know that just one click will invoke the player, which will add itself to the Systray and the Startup Menu. Then, I have to go to msconfig to uncheck it, but I notice that if I uncheck it, and then accidentally click a .rm link, RealPlayer will add a NEW entry to the Registry Editor instead of just rechecking the box that I unchecked.
Anybody know of any way to prevent this most irritating behavior? |

If you don't use it, why not just uninstall it? :) |

Fair enough, sy. Well, every now and then, I want to listen to something (I love the radio program To The Best of Our Knowledge, for example), and I keep it on my system just in case. Besides, I just tried to download a copy after I'd uninstalled it on another computer, and it took me about five minutes to figure out how to download the free version, and that thing keeps popping up messages to me, among other things.
Yeah, I know it's probably not possible to stop this thing from trying to take over my computer and my life, but I thought I'd ask/vent. |

Lol, best of both worlds then?
I don't really have a solution that i can test here (don't use realplayer) but you could try having a look at this:

Hth, and I will check out the link you mention too

I've left it installed (just in case) but disabled it's start up by clicking on start, run "msconfig" Just go to the startup tab and uncheck it. |

Yeah, that's what I do now, but I don't like this method for a couple of reasons--first, I disagree with Real Network's philosophy of inserting itself wherever it likes; second, it's tedious to do this; third, I've noticed at least two checkboxes for RealPlayer there, leading me to believe that it simply re-enters itself into the Registry whenever you use it.
I think I might go more the anti-Trojan route, as sy has pointed out. BTW doc, your forum is very nicely done, and offers a valuable service. It's nice to see so many Snitz people working to contribute something to the community/society. I've noticed that Snitz communities, for whatever reason, tend to be more altruistic than those with paid boards. |

That's odd that yours does that, because it doesn't do it on mine... |

In the preferences for real player (you have to dig down quite far) you need to disable "Start Center". Once you do that, it should stop automatically putting itself in the startup folder and in the registry. At least it does for me. The thing that really gets me with them is finding their **** icons everywhere after installing it. They are even worse than Netscape in that regard. |

Uhhh... but Netscape tries to install all kinds of useless "services" and programs. Like WinAmp (it's nice, but I don't need it), AOL messenger and that (free) AOL access junk. That poo keeps popping up everywhere on the desktop, start menu and favorites once Netscape is installed...
Sorry, ignore me. I accidentally took this off-topic |

Now that you mention it, this is what I did, and it stopped that. Good job! |
