Great news, I am very pleased he can follow his hobbies and interests online again.

Frankly, I don't think he was/is such a menace. He was just a smart guy at a time no one really cared much about security. Probably he should be thanked for his pioneering role in raising concerns about computer security... |

Nice one, Bullent . I may be wrong about it, but I don't think the guy really destroyed anything. Probably he was a bit of a show off, and could use a bit more common sense, but I have no idea of him causing the problems the script kiddies so often cause, by destroying files or data. |

Mitnick had hosted the Screen Savers on TechTV a couple of times and before that was a guest numerous times too. He is a cool guy from what I have seen and someone respected for his knowledge about security. |

Sorry, I don't respect people who break into houses or computers.

Apology accepted.
Wasn't trying to convince anybody of what they think about the guy. Just posted my opinion on him. |

Lets be a bit realistic here, he was a kid doing stupid kid things. He thought free phone calls were a good thing, thought it was all an adventure etc. He got caught, he became a scapegoat. See http://www.freedomdowntime.com/ for a film that shows the non-media hyped/other side.
I too disagree with theft/vandalism/etc, and love my liberty etc. What KM did though was to draw security to everyone's attention. And security isn't just what firewall you're running, or what version of your email client you're using, it's a much much bigger arena.
So am I worried KM is going to be allowed to use a computer? No, of course not. I'm more concerned about script kiddies, to be honest.# Do I respect KM? Yes I do, but only because he's clearly a fairly smart cookie who's paid a hefty price for his previous misdemeanours. He did a crime, he has been punished. Do I respect what he did? Not particularly. In a way I'm glad it was some kid with more time on his hands than awareness, rather than 'them', whoever the current forces of evil are deemed to be.
If you're prepared not to demonise a person but to hear both sides, try http://www.freekevin.com in conjunction with the above links :). |

Well, kind of like the way Butch Cassidy drew attention to the dangers of shipping payrolls by train?
You can rationalize away all sorts of criminal behavior if you put your mind to it

At first glance I was a bit skeptical that this site would show both sides with a domain name called freekevin.com and after actually going to the website I can say that this is hardly a way to get "both sides" or even a little bit of objectivity. Doug's right, crime is crime. I read some of Kevin's articles and all I saw was overactive rationalization and excuse making for his guilty plea. Make him a folk hero if you must but realize that what he did was still wrong, against the law and damaging. He admitted to these crimes in court then turned to the press and tried to make it look like he was railroaded. Nice try but the facts speak for themselves. Not only that but he became the inspiration for thousands and thousands of script kiddies and that may be the worst part of it. Thanks Kevin.

Lest we forget how our legal system works........ he did the crime, then he did the time. He's paid his debt to society. Now he says he wants to straighten out his life and become a law-abiding citizen again. Hearings before a Federal Judge and also the FCC convinced them that he was sincere about this.
So now he gets his second chance. That's how our system works. Now it's up to him what direction he takes. Not a perfect system by far, but better than most.

How odd, from reading his articles the impression I have is that he is 100% unrepentant. Whatever, he's out, but he's no hero. Just another ex-con.

Never meant to imply he's a hero. He's not. But everybody should get a second chance, shouldn't they? I'd bet if it were "your" son, you'd sure want him to be allowed to make amends and turn his life around for the better. Or would you?
