I don't know if this is the right area or not, but I'm interested in finding out how other moderators deal with "heated" issues.
We frequently get some heated debates going in our forums and I'm working on coming up with some guidelines to help. But I'm also curious as to what others do when things get too hot (or what they do to stop them before they get there). This includes when you lock a topic, warning posts, posts to users, or whatever anyone does.
Thanks for any input because I think if I could calm down some of the battles it would be great. |

If you take a look at some of the discussions around here, you'll see that there have been many "heated" ones. It's really your discretion, but I'd say at the first sign of a discussion going bad, post a gentle reminder that discussions should be positive. If that doesn't work, lock the topic. If you have someone who continually tries to stir trouble, an email to that person would be warranted explaining that if they continue, their account could be locked.

don, I got your email ... you could always do a search on the Community discussions. There have been some recent ones. |

I take it you mean recent discussions about this same subject? |

no, there were some posts that were locked and/or a gentle "warning" made ... I didn't want to mention the exact post since it seems to be a sensitive subject. |

Oh... well I guess they're perfect examples of how often topics (don't) get locked. In general you have to search to find a locked topic in the Community Discussions forum. The Help: General/Current Version forum however is a bit different, but that's mostly due to double posts... |

Thanks. I guess you tend to lock double posts where I've been deleting them. Do you find the locking works better to make sure people know not to double post? I assume that's the reason for the lock instead of delete.
I'm also going to be putting up a sticky topic about how to get the best response and part of that discusses double posting so hopefully that will help. |

I prefer to lock a double post after posting a reply to say that it's a double post and that that's why it's being locked. A link to the other (usually earlier posted) topic is often added too. This usually makes things clear, and prevents people from posting the same again because their topic "disappeared" without a trace |

Locking the post with a reason to lock is better option. It also helps to convey the message to others for what not to post. |
