I can't get my website to come up... I thought my forums were down but people are telling me they are working and there have been posts on them all throughout the day. Some of my local friends on different IP's than me also can not get my website to come up on their computer's either. This problem has existed all day and all night. I get an error saying that the page can not be displayed.
I also suspect I'm having email problems because I haven't gotten any and I've been emailing my host reddi-web and haven't heard back from him.
I can't figure this one out. I can get to everyone's website but my own and most of the people I talk to seem to be able to get to my website. I did a tracert to www.surfsteve.com and both surfsteve.com I think it should have worked either way but not surprisingly I get an "unable to resolve target system name.
How do I fix this? Where do I start looking? Tomorrow I'll call my ISP when they open and see if they can tell me anything but I'm baffled. Any ideas?

81.3.74.20 is the IP Address that www.surfsteve.com resolves to. Can you try doing a tracert and a ping to that IP Address?
It's possible that the DNS Server that your ISP provides might have some bad data. |

| Thanks. I'm doing it now. The tracert 81.3.74.20 is working but took almost 5 mins and made 17 hops. The Ping worked really fast. The tracert to www.surfsteve.com and ping still doesn't work. What does this mean? Is there anything I can do? |

I assume you are using some version of Windows. If so, you can edit the hosts file and add an entry like this:
81.3.74.20 www.surfsteve.com
In Windows 2000, the hosts file is located in the following directory:
c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
If you don't have a hosts file, you might have a hosts.sam file. If so, that's just a sample file, you can copy that file and then rename it to just hosts.

| Just for the hell of it I tried putting 81.3.74.20 into my browser and it went to reddi-web's website. Is there any way I can get to my own website that way which is hosted by them? |

I did a find and got my hosts file and placed
81.3.74.20 www.surfsteve.com
below the local host but when I put 81.3.74.20 or
81.3.74.20 www.surfsteve.com into my browser window it still goes to reddi-web and not my website which is hosted under redd-web
I get the feeling I am on the wrong track
should this problem fix it's self? if so how long? |

surfsteve, as it states on my FAQ page you can't access your site via IP.
after you edited the HOSTS file as Richard suggested, did you try another ping or tracert ?
I would also contact your ISP, it has been over a week since your DNS changed
so there muct be something wrong at your ISP |

Huw.... Yes I tried both ping and tracert and it was unable to do either. Have you been getting the emails I've been sending thru my IP server? None of them bounced back. If you got any of them did you reply? I just assumed that you changed servers again... guess not. I called My ISP and they don't know what's going on. They are unable to access www.surfsteve.com from their computer either and are looking into it.
My ISP also said they are having problems with their mail server.
After that, I thought maybe this was an ISP issue so I logged on to the internet using a different account from the same ISP that a friend claims my site is working from at her house but it doesn't work from my house.

Richard,
Since my ISP can't get to my website either and Huw is telling me that I can not access my website via IP wont running the program at http://www.jhsoft.com/ be a waste of time?
I'm willing to try anything that has a realistic chance of working but I don't want to be installing and uninstalling programs and risking a registry crash for nothing.

| The Simple DNS Plus program is basically a DNS Server that you run on your own computer. It gets the records from the root DNS Servers so it bypasses your ISP's DNS Server. |

I've just spoken with the owner of my ISP and she admits that the email problem is caused because her ISP routes thru www.SAW.NET. She says www.SAW.NET is involved in some kind of dispute with SPRINT and that they hope to get the issue resolved in the next few hours and if it can't be they will be desperately searching for a new route for the internet traffic which means the problem could exist for several days.
She says it's very odd that I can't get to my own website and yet can get to any other one. She feels that the saw.net issue doesn't seem like it would logically be causing my problem but that the fact both issues started happening at the same time makes her feel it could be.
