I have 2 Win2K Pc's networked via a crossover cable but only have room for 1 monitor right now. Is there a good, free remote control software out there that I can use to control the 2nd PC?

Are you sure about this? I was under the impression that you needed a Windows Server OS to run Terminal Services (that is, you could only connect to a Win2K server) and they are not free, since you need to pay a licence, AFAIK... |

I agree, set up Terminal Services in Remote Administration mode on one of the Servers and your good to go. I'd use the Client that comes with Windows XP if you can get a hold of it though (RD32) its a little better and newer than trhe W2K one. Using terminal services you can also Administer/log on to the second machine using a little ActiveX web applet which is quite handy.
Of course if one or both aren't servers then I don't think (havent got a 2k workstation here to confirm) you can install Terminal Services so you'll have to use something like VNC instead |

BTW Terminal Services in Remote Admin mode doesnt require any additional licenses, only when you have it in Application Mode. |

Thx for the info. I'm not that familiar with Terminal Services under Win2K. I do use them with XP, though it works a bit more simple, I believe. In fact, there is only Remote Admin mode, probably you'll have the full functionality in the server OSes. |

The only thing that doesn't seem to work for me under TS is remotely debugging VB/ASP/COM/COM+ apps - something to do with user contexts. |

Remote Administrator is very good - great refresh rate (500+ times/second on LAN), 128-Bit encryption, supports 95-XP, allows remote rebooting, logon/off, Telnet, multi-language, etc.
Details here: Radmin
Trial version here: Download
And no - before you ask, I don't work for them LOL. I just test hundreds of applications and think this one is outstanding. |

Thats probably because when using TS you are running in a local user context, not as a remote user. |

I have purchased this and found it to be heaps slower than Terminal Services and even PC Anywhere.quote: Originally posted by Carefree Remote Administrator is very good - great refresh rate (500+ times/second on LAN), 128-Bit encryption, supports 95-XP, allows remote rebooting, logon/off, Telnet, multi-language, etc.
Don't get me wrong, it is a good product, just a bit slow. That was also over a 100Mb network as well, where I did have delays of upto 3 seconds on RADMIN, but TS has not had the delay.

Thanks Ruirib ... this is exactly what I was looking for. I load PC Anywhere on my customers Point-Of-Sale Server and use VNC on the individual POS terminals. So easy!!
Got my Head Office in Sydney installing it all for me tonight on their network so I can conduct online training for new users and troubleshoot different apps. |
