I've been following these .NET threads avidly for a while now. I'd like to rewrite my site in .NET but I'm limited because I use Snitz for authentication. For that reason I'm interested in seeing a .NET version of these forums. Just thought I'd throw my vote into the hat :)

What I was saying is that I doubt any of your work would benifit the dev team if or when they decide to make an official .NET version.

I realize the DEV team is busy with 3.4 and (?) 4.0 right now. If there are people that are interested in writing a new .NET front-end to the current database structure how does that cause any problems? The code may or may not be incorporated into any future "offical" .NET version. However in the mean time people can be poking around the code, solving problems and generally gaining knowledge.

It seems the worst case is that the effort is discarded and a new version started. And even in that case we'll all learn from the approach they took. In a best case there may be written, debugged classes that can be used. And many more people actively involved in the development process.

Any changes you make would be of no good to us. If the dev team ever chooses to move to .NET it will be a totall rebuild. Likely from the database structure on up.

I'm suprised they would take this approach. It would seem a very easy transition to write a .NET front-end to the existing database structure. I'm not sure why they would add the complexity of a database redesign at the same time. Don't get me wrong here -- I'm all in favor of a database redesign. I'm just not sure that's the best time to do it.

"If the dev team ever chooses to move to .NET" -- why would they not? I'm a user of Snitz. I've tried to give back to the community as much as possible by helping in the database end which is what I know best. I'm here asking for someone to start on a .NET version. I'd be happy to help with writing the queries. There are some huge improvements to be made there.

I don't understand why people are discouraging developers from working on a .NET version of Snitz? It may not be an official version but I don't see how it can hurt.

If you want to create a .NET front end that is a great idea for a mod. A massive one it may be.

Though, if you were going to go into such depth, why dont you just start from scratch?

I said 'if' because I am not a member of the develpment team, I cannot speak for them.

It causes a problem because when they see Snitz, they automatically come here for support. It happens with the Huw modded Snitz version, even though he tells people to go to his site for support.

We have our hands full supporting the current version PLUS the people still looking for help with the older versions that don't want to upgrade PLUS developing the new release(s). We don't need to add another product for us to develop at this time....

I'm replying to this thread just to see how many people are interested in 'dotnetting' Snitz. I am certainly very interested because server load from an ASPX page will typically be 10 times less than ASP (JIT compilation) and the code is much more maintainable and object-oriented.

DreaMaster, Can you show us how far you are with your Snitz.NET version?
