Hi LeoRat,
I agree, we should give users the option for the type of encoding they prefer to use. Since you have the file, why don't you send bozden a copy and explain your logic. I'm sure that he'll agree that more choices within a single language won't hurt.

File is sent to Bozden. Lang1041.asp as is at R1.3 with the current change, is not final. I have noticed, one version earlier implementation of Lang1041 at Dixon's site came back with a registration confirmation message which, was lost its integrity in receiving a full message (some words were broken and chars lost) and also Japanese was bit awkard/unnatural. I believe this langstring I may not have changed. Since there are already some different versions flying around, and I don't have a good revision management system, I would not like to see lang1041 released with a next "official" relese as is, since it won't be clean. Also since yesterday, I cannot access to my forum (which I was testing lagng rendering) so I cannot do a simple check and revision change. Also hindered by this is since I am using a free Brinkster account, and some of the email features etc. may not be fully implemented to verify some message contents. I start using Dixon's since his site is functionally complete and up running.
So, I have to review a way to test/QA.
Yes, it is a tedious process.. I guess I should know better - TRANSLATION IS ART...very subjective and variant...so regardless of a scale, there is always issues in a workflow management and quality control....and a rigorous and well defined/agreed workflow is a key for consistency - review, review, review, test, test, test.......probably much worse than debugging codes unless there is a well defined guideline established for language styles, etc. (glossary and translation memory type things) (A bit of my past pitch slipping in)
You did a tremendous job starting translating..... Anyway, sorry but I have to take a little break on this for the above reasons...I want to get my testing site up first.
If your child is a girl, you will be celebrating 3/3 Girl's Day in Japan, if your child is a boy, you will be celebrating 5/5 Boy's ... eithe case, you will have a celebration!!! Am not sure how many countries celebrate such occasiions officially as holidays although I guess there was some proposal or something up in the US..
Cheers,
Taku (a la leorat)

Hi all,
A quick note:
Just realized that there are still lingistic QA related issues with Lang1041 (the most recent one submitted to Bozden).
1) Kea's QA check points out the terminologies/expressions that were not not well translated, contextually ambiguous..some of those are "direct" translation from the original. All items pointed out happen to be the ones that I wasn't clear. So those terminologies need to be worked on...or we need to establish a point of agreement as to what expressions will be the best.
2) Registration Response... This also need to be re-worked. I am not sure why but I got a broken Japanese message from utf-8 based FORUM (Dixon's) but was ok from Shift-JIS FORUM (Kea's).
Don't believe encoding/char rendering is an issue anylonger.
So, lang1041 status is not quite 100% complete...
So, if you like to review and make changes, or recommend "better expressions" that will be great.

Hi everybody,
These changes sound fine to me. I'm not a japanese native so I'm sure parts of my original translation were going to be strange. How extensive are the replacements for these words? Has anyone checked?

Seahorse,
1041 I have is now 4.03 compatible. I didn't see Bozden's version comparison analysis until this evening. I was comparing 1033 in patch 003 with 1041 I have and was finding 6 files missing from 1041...now I know why. I just worked to make 1041 4.03 compatible. However, I am still finding some wording to be fixed from your original... some small items but... As for the expressions discussed above, I am selectively adjusting.. such as "moderator" should be "moderator" in katakana, rather than coordinator... FAQ should provide basic terminology/usage definitiions or what they mean in FORUM.. so it is more important to make sure that FAQ's contents are contextually clear.
BTW, I removed all 1041 from my download site intentionally as changes had been made. Also, I will not create a separate JIS file, but stick with UTF-8.
Best, Taku

Hi Seahorse,
I just sent a "final" version of updated 1041 to Bozden for version check. All changes being made to be "compatible" with V4.03, along with additional localizaiton...and it's pretty much all in Japanese.
This version is up at http://www26.brinkster.com/i2asia/forum/ (w/o automatic email response feature....however since this is running on a free Brinkster hosting service.)
Best, Taku

Hi LeoRat,
How is your forum running? I've got a question for you regarding the unicode. Have you tried reading your forum in Japanese from a regular English PC without the IME? I'm curious to know if it still can display the kanji.
By the way, your forum at brinkster is giving me errors. I couldn't view the site.

IME is relevant primarily for Japanese input/editor on English Windows machine....and it will be more of a browser function for a proper Japanese representation/rendering... You may have to set it to UTF-8 to see a proper Japanese rendering, like you have to set to Shift-JIS for Shift-JIS encoded page, or EUC for EUC encoded.... Japanese (auto-select) should detect and represent/render properly...
Possibly reasons for your not accessing my i2Asia site is because I am in-and-out of the site trying to get lang2052 (Simplified Chinese) added to the forum and having some problems. I was also testing with other language, esp. Spanish, to see whether it works, and does not seem to work properly...having VBScript error...
I am resetting the site back to the previously installed "state" with 6 languages (Japanese, US English, German, French, Traditional Chinese, and Italian)...
You should be able to access and view it then. I won't be touching it for a while, except testing/playing with some functionalities. I have gone through Admin functions/features pretty much (except automatic email response, since Brinkster free account do not have a POP3 account avaiable)and seems working ok.
Will send you Lang1041.asp, the latest revision, which is running on i2AsiaFORUM...still I see a little QA item.
Best, Taku

Hi Seahorse,
Just resolved the problem with VBscript error for the Forum. Obviously there is a max number of languages installable at Brinkster - perhaps some cache size issue?. I removed 3 from the original 6 which were working fine, and added T. Chinese, thus now with 4 languages (English-US, Japanese, T Chinese and S Chinese). Working fine.
You should be able to take a look at this Forum now. If you still have some problems, please let me know.
Thanks, Taku

I got it. Thanks. I will stay with my revised lang mix for the Forum. I already see some performance hit (am not sure this is in part due to some inherent performance issues with Brinkster but, definitely makes some difference). I have a bilingual Forum (EN/JA) and a multilingual Forum.

Seahorse,
Mailed you a lang1041 - V4.03 compatible, and the latest revision that I had made. It's in utf-8 format, but should be easily converted into SHIFT-JIS encoding.
Cheers, Taku
