I am still confused as to what the error is. If someone can tell me what the problem is, I will try to find a solution to it. |

There is nothing you can do to keep two people from working on the same topics. Just like there's nothing the software can do to keep Huw from deleting a topic while I'm trying to edit it. Its just one of those things inherent in multi-user systems.
Carefree, as near as I can tell from the fragments of posting someone deleted a topic that he was trying to merge and it caused a problem. |

A person could add another column into the topics table. And then when whoever had the authority to edit the post clicked on the edit icon that as post.asp rendered, that value could change from say a 0 to a 1. Then after submitting the edited post, the 1 would be changed back to a 0. During the time the post is being edited, if another person was to try to edit the same post, it could be coded to show a message stating that the post is currently being edited and to try again later. A person would have to code all of that in, but that could alleviate the problem of two people editing the same post at the same time.
The said solution above could also prevent someone from deleting the post while someone else is editing it. I would think. |

Simply change the value of any T_STATUS (which is currently a "0" - allowing editing) to a "1" while editing, then revert it to "0" when editing is complete.
It would take a bit of searching and editing to make this happen. |

I also thought of something else. You would have to do a comparison against an additional date column. I would put an additional date column. The reason I say this is if a person didn't complete the edit. For example, if they just clicked off the page and went somewhere else, then the status would keep the post publicly locked (in CareFree's example) or privately locked (in my example). So, you would have to specify a window of time to allow a person to edit the topic and then upon the next person attempting to edit the post a comparison should be done between the date/time the post was first attempted to be edited and the current date/time. That way it would free the post to be edited by the next person requesting to edit it. |
