I'm getting rid of some old but still operational computers. What precautions do folks recommend regarding cleansing the hard drive of personal information?

Much software out there that complies with DoD standard XXX.X Some freeware, I believe.
Google for topic: "wipe disk" DoD download one of the compliant 'wipe disk' utilities... run it...
Example: http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/securedelete.shtml

I've disposed of a few drives with sensitive data, with all these I've just opened them up and smashed the discs inside =) Then it'll take MUCH effort and money for someone to recreate the data.
On others I've just done a low-format of the drive, depending on the level of sensitive data =)

I always at least use the diskwipe utility from symantec ghost. Set to 7 passes minimum. Even if you don't think it contains sensitive data, it may provide too much information to the wrong people.
If it is known to have sensitive data...DESTROY IT. Like tribaliztic said, dismantle it and take a hammer to it. If you beat it up enough, there will be no way to recover anything from it. And besides, it's fun!

If you're really paranoid, you could turn it into a clock. I know the director over at Camp Dixie and his network tech's significant other makes clocks out of old hard drives. I bet there are directions floating around the 'net somewhere. |

Well thanks for the input. I'm not sure if I'll go with the suggestion from garyb or simply remove the hard drive for physical destruction. There's a place that recycles computers and I'd like deliver a few old machines to them. I'll have to call and see if they accept the computer sans hard drive.
