At least that's what I was singing Friday & Saturday after watching a phenomenal match between France & Argentina and seeing England barely scraping past America. Then Sunday brought about the antics of Paul Honiss, who had quite clearly had a brown envelope slipped in his direction by South Africa in order to encourage him to referee Samoa out of their match, and an Irish performance that was nothing short of abysmal, both of which have me wondering whether I can be bothered with the rest of the tournament. The only saving grace of yesterday's rugby was seeing Namibia & Portugal make their mark on the world stage with absolutely stellar performances.

Well, can't say I'm a rugby fan, but the fact that our amateur team got to the world cup has sparked a lot of enthusiasm here. For an amateur team, yesterday's performance was quite good and there were some thrilling moments. Next game with New Zealand will be much harder .

It was a good weekend of games, with some good performances from the new teams.

I have tickets for next weekends Wales v Australia so have my fingers crossed for a Welsh victory

Well, ye definitely can't afford the same mid-game slump ye had against Canadia, Huw. Wales definitely have it in them to upset the Wallabies but not based on last weekend's matches.

Unfortunately, I think, NZ - Portugal might be a bit of a one-sided train wreck

I agree Shaggy, if we play against the Wallabies how we started against Canada we are screwed, but if he picks the right team we stand a good chance.

NZ were just awesome in their match, I really don't see anyone beating them this year.

I agree. The goal set by the national coach is not to let them reach 100 points...

Don't laugh, this is a first for us and experience at high level is fundamental to perform well.

I agree with this just ask Djokivic whp played Federer in the US Open yesterday

He should have won and the inexperiance at the high level I think made him collapse under the pressure.

I'm not; I actually think ye have the potential to beat Italy if you both play as you did at the weekend and finish 3rd in the group. Whether, as an amateur team, you have the stamina to last 4 matches in quick succession could be your only downfall.

Yeah, I see your point. I know they trained hard, but let's see how this turns out. I'm confident that they'll do well, but I also know sometimes experience is the key to handle such a hard competition well... and you don't have experience until you actually play at this level.

They've beat Romania in the past, so I think they are seeing Romania as the game to win :).

Not a very good image, Mark, actually.
This is actually an amateur team, that fought their way up to a world cup. If nothing else, that should deserve respect from rugby lovers. If anything symbolizes the true spirit of sport, IMHO, is a feat such as this.
The flying pig image... well I'll leave you with the credits for posting it.

Wow, way to take a joke, Rui. Was just a bit of gentle ribbing. Note, I did wish Portugal good luck.

Of course, all rugby fans respect a team who can play their way into the top tier. There's still a large gulf between the top teams of old and the relatively new guys but it's closing fast. Just look at how Canada and the US have played in recent games against England.

Maybe it's a cultural thing, Mark, but I don't really like the flying pig image. Maybe you guys see it differently, but it did look a bit offensive.

No harm done, anyway.

Indeed, Rui. I've always lamented rugby turning professional as I have very strong feelings about money playing a part in any sport beyond expenses and sponsorship; a sport should be played for the love of the game, the honour of representing you club/county/province/country and, most importantly, the glory of winning. Portugal & Namibia epitomised these ideals for me over the weekend, which was summed up nicely by the huge smile on, I think, Uva's face when he returned from his yellow card.

And if you think my thoughts about money in sport are out of whack, just look at how the South Africans managed to buy themselves a referee

Well, Shaggy, money and sports are going along together, these days, I don't think anyone can do much about that, but it still is very much important to see that there are people for whom sports are not all about money.

To tell you the truth, one of the most emotional moments in any colective or individual sports that I can remember was the singing of the national anthem, with all those guys singing it loudly and many of them crying from the emotion of the moment. I had never seen anything like it, it was an incredible show of pride for the opportunity of being there, representing Portugal and the portuguese rugby. The match showed that as well, and we can even get thrashed by New Zealand and lose every single game we play, but it was worth it, if for anything else, for that moment .
