Well, I (unfortunately) didn't get the job I applied for this spring. However, the same department has posted another job opening on the KU website, and I'm set up for an interview next week for it. This is pretty much the same job as I applied for last time, so hopefully I'll do even better on the interview. However, as before, I'd love any and all advice you guys could supply, as well as some tough questions you think they may ask. I get the feeling that I'm up against some very serious competition this time, so I'll need to really bring my "A" game to the interview if I want to stand a chance.
I'm attaching a copy of the job description to give you guys a better idea of exactly what I'll be doing. Any and all advice is more than welcome, and keep your fingers well crossed! This job, as before, could be massively life-changing for me, so I'm really hoping to get it. And I'm doing everything I can think of to prepare mentally to put myself in the right mindset for the interview, which, by the way, is next Wed, Oct 3rd.

Search is your friend “I was having a mildly paranoid day, mostly due to the fact that the mad priest lady from over the river had taken to nailing weasels to my front door again.” |

First of all Good Luck. Second the only thing I can say is go in there believeing you have already got the job and show that confidence in yourself not only in your ability but also in your ability to learn and do things as they want you to do it. I think most people don't get the jobs they go for because they doubt themselves.
Really that is my advice, Oh and always brag about yourself in an interview when they ask you to tell them your strengths they really want to hear them its not boastful. |

Thanks, guys. I'm definitely going into this with a positive attitude. A lot of stuff has happened over the past 4-6 weeks that has really changed my outlook on stuff. I've made a lot of changes to better myself, and I think I'm ready to take on this job. It's all about the attitude, and mine is better than it's been in a long time.
I'll let you guys know how the interview goes. |

I sense you have excellent skills and high level of qualification for a position. In my last career, I used to be working for a state dept of ed Office of Technology - similar group like your employer organization is - in charge of email/database systems for k12 with 40K+users across the state. I was in a very similar situation at the interview, as I came from privater sectors in high tech for a long time. Position description mentions primarily duties/responsibilities, but does not indicate the problems or issues that they would like to solve... one thing you may consider is position yourself as a solution provider to the challenges and problem areas that they face to address, and you can present how you will be the man in delivering these solutions... this works much better than talking about technical skills etc. (which you may be "overqualified" in some sense.)
Good luck, and as JJ said, with quient confidence, present your case and impress them that they need you.

My guess is the percentages they show are a bit out of whack, supporting 450 users AND Novell is a full-time job in itself for multiple people
Good luck!

Well, I had the interview this morning, and it turns out I was getting all bent out of shape for nothing. I went in with confidence and a lot more verve than before, and I think the interview went *extremely* well. I think I've got a really good chance at getting this job.
So now we sit and wait... should be about one and a half to two weeks. Keep your fingers crossed! |
