Hi,

The company i work for's CMS vendor told us today that the message board built into their CMS is a version of Snitz, however i can't seem to find the version number or any other identifying marks. He told us that they bought the source code to build it into the CMS. It looks like an older version as there is very little functionality, unless of course their programmers stripped it out.

We'd like to see if it's possible to upgrade to the current version of Snitz, is there any way to find out what version we have and if we'd be able to upgrade without losing our users/posts?

Any help would be awesome, thanks!

the board is here: http://www.feastmagazine.net/ME2/Apps/DiscussionBoard/default.asp

This has come up before... search and you will find.

Here's a good recent topic to start with - http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=64115

I'd challenge your CMS vendor's assertion that he 'bought the source code' to Snitz, it is, and always has been free, but with that price-point comes the obligation to credit the people who did the work, the folks HERE!

Assuming they haven't wrecked the db structures, it should be entirely possible to upgrade, but you may find yourself outside of your CMS to some degree if they've messed with the code a lot.

Seems to me the CMS vendor broke the Snitz copyright agreement.

'## All copyright notices regarding Snitz Forums 2000
'## must remain intact in the scripts and in the outputted HTML
'## The "powered by" text/logo with a link back to
'## http://forum.snitz.com in the footer of the pages MUST
'## remain visible when the pages are viewed on the internet or intranet.

Otherwise the link would appear in the footer and hovering over it would show you the version number.

I had a feeling this was the case when I read on the FAQ that the source wasn't for sale in any way. As a big fan/user/supporter of open source this really doesn't sit too well with me. If the developers of Snitz would care to follow up on this please feel free to email me for contact info of the company. It may be moot however, from what i understand they've switched to a different platform (i wonder who they stole the new one from?)

Thanks for the info, we'll take a look at the DB structure to see if we can upgrade and get the Snitz link back up there

your CMS Vendor is indeed in breach of copyright, not only have they removed the powered by link but have actually removed the entire copyright from our code, this constitutes theft.

You're welcome. Best of luck getting things straightened out. We'll try to help as best we can, but a lot is going to depend on how much they've modified the code to get it to work with everything else.

brendan22,

if your db is SQL server and you are willing to maybe email login details to me I am prepared to have a look at your db and try to ascertain which version you are actually using, and tell you whether it would be easy to upgrade, or maybe you could make me an admin on your forum, I registered as mushroom a few minutes ago, if I can poke around in the admin pages I can almost certainly tell you which version is in use.

Thanks for the offer HuwR, I really appreciate it. But I'll have to check with my boss before I can give you admin status!

Brendan22, you're absolutely correct to do this - I can vouch for Huw, but that should mean nothing to you!

Perhaps you can take dumps of some of the tables, or at least the table structures?!

hey guys, our programmer found the version number (3.4.03) in the config file, and we were able to update to 3.4.06. So the Snitz link is back up!

Thanks for all your offers of help, you guys rock!
