Ok, a brief background on what I'm trying to do here.
I have a device that sits between my LAN and my Modem that is a content filter. One of its functions is to send DSN logs to an email address. I have a database set up to recieve the logs so that I can do some analysis on the data later, and adjust the filter. My problem is that the device config only lets me specify a mail server, and not authentification details. My mail server requires authentification for outgoing email.
Any suggestions? |

Bad luck - you've got firmware from back in the days of the nice internet rather than the sleazy place it's becoming. In the olden days, open relay was common, but as more nasty spammers get to work abusing generously given open relay, bam, they're shut down.
You could try exposing an open SMTP server on your box, but make sure it only accepts connections from your device IP/MAC/whatever...?
Just a thought |

I thought of that, but I don't have a stationary box.
The firmware is brand new, its just dumb. |

darn it - maybe the vendor of the box have a firmware update to mend it?
Your SMTP Relay needn't have it's own box, it'll share quite happily, btw. Or you could try looking for an open relay online, but they're all spam-saturated now, so shut-down :( |

I think I'm going to complain to the vendor, Its kinda dumb that the current firmware doesn't support an authenticated mail server. |

I think that's for the best - good luck, hope you either get a fix or your cash back so you can buy a better unit! |
