Good point Gremlin, if you can't add a hardware RAID, then doing the software mirror is the next best bet.

How would that affect my CD-ROMs? I've got a CD-RW drive and a CD-ROM drive. Currently (until the crash) I had the two CD drives on one IDE channel, and the two HDDs on the other channel. In a situation like this, is it still possible to software mirror? |

Not really. You've already got 4 IDE devices. Most motherboards of your "age" only have 2 IDE channels, only giving you 4 devices. And, since you only have 2 PCI slots and they're both being used...you're kind of in a tough place. You'd need to be willing to remove the CD-ROM to make room for a new hard drive.

What I've decided to do is keep the old 20gb that I have now in addition to my new 160gb that Maxtor is sending me. Once I get the money, I'll replace the 20gb with another 160gb and do a software mirror on the two drives. I've never filled up 160 anyways, so might as well keep myself safe. :) |

If I am not too late, let me suggest that you install the trouble drive as a SLAVE on the same cable as a working drive.
I have had this happen to me in the past with just about every brand of drive. Letting the master drive do the work usually does the trick.
Also, may I suggest something for backups? I have a 200gb IDE hard disk that I have in a USB housing. This allows me to take the drive from machine to machine easily. I use Acronis True Image to image my drives, and I do this every other day. If you lose a drive it is very easy to boot into Acronis (you make an Acronis boot CD at install) and restore an image in minutes.
Good luck!

Well, the drive was a slave drive, and the controller board was fried, so there really wasn't any hope unless I wanted to pay to have the data recovered. Acronis sounds like it might be a good program to have. What's the cost on it, and where can I learn more? |

I got it from Amazon the other day for about £16. I found it very easy to create an image, but have not yet had to restore one. http://www.acronis.com/ |
