I've got down to the problem...
In the BIOS, the CPU was set at 166 mhz, which meant it was running at it's normal 1.5 Ghz. However, when I turned this down to 133 mhz, which meant it ran at 1.2 Ghz, it doesn't freeze!
Grrr, is there anyway I can find out what mhz I can safely set it to? |

Is the fan secured to the CPU correctly and securely? If you have a BIOS that supports hardware monitoring, check the CPU temp.
I've installed chips hundreds of times, and on my last one I didn't notice that the bottom of the copper sink had a little notch for one side of the socket. It would touch, but not enough to run the CPU full throttle. Like you, I had to back the multiplier down to get it to run stably. Took me a few hours to figure that one out. |

Replace the PSU with a spare if you've got it, often random lock ups and freezes can be attributed to PSU. Note that dropping the FSB of the Chip will have reduced the current demand on the power supply, which if it's faulty or undervolted may have been enough to stabilise the system. |

My guesses from experience (in order):
CPU cooling problem Memory problem Power supply problem CPU problem
