Hi
I wonder if someone could throw some help my way?
I'm making a PC for someone, but I've come across a problem which I can't get to the bottom of.

I'm building a PC for a friend, and have purchased the following parts;
1 x AMD Sempron 2200+ Processor Skt A 256cache 333fsb - OEM CPU (SDA2200DUT3D)
1 x PcChips M848ALU SKT A SIS 748 400 DDR AGPx8 ATA133 6CH Sound/lAN/USB 2.0 will Take Upto a 3.2+ AMD Athlon XP And Sempron CPU's Retail Box
1 x Ebuyer 256MB DDR PC2700 333MHz 184pin Extra Value Ram
1 x Coolermaster CP5-6J31C Socket A Upto XP3000 and Sempron 3100+ AMD Approved Cooler
1 x Casecom Kg-188 ATX Mid Tower Case In Grey and Silver No PSU
1 x 300W ATX Power Supply
1 x Western Digital Caviar 40Gb 7200rpm IDE Disk Drive
I have put it all together, and installed XP Pro, but have come across a problem. The PC freezes after a couple of minutes. First of all I thought it was the CD drive, but now it does it when browsing the hardrive etc.
I did have it setup so the HDD was master on IDE1 and the CD was master on IDE2, so I moved the CD onto IDE1 as slave, so the motherboard was only using one IDE cable.
I decided to flash the BIOS to the latest version, in a hope to solve the problem, but it's not gone away.
I booted into Safe Mode in an attempt to install the motherboard drivers but even though the CD autorun menu appeared, I couldn't go through the setup as it says something wasn't available (I assume because I was in Safe Mode). I've managed to install, using a USB memory stick, the motherboard drivers from their website;

I emailed the motherboard manufacturer last night, but the auto response says they should reply in 5 days.

If you want to spare on something, definitely do not do it on RAM. Buy RAM of known reliable brands (Kingston, Micron and such). I would take a look at the RAM chip.
Even with that long thread, I still think you should have tried to make a summary of what you've tried here. It's kinda annoying to have to visit some other site to get the info you need to help. |

I can run it ok in Safe Mode, so I assume it's not a hardware problem, but I may be wrong.
I'm going to deselect anything in startup, and see if it helps. I'll also attempt to boot safe mode with networking, to see if it's down to the networking problem / idea. |

Even if it's fine in safe mode? Ok, I'll try and borrow a spare RAM strip off someone.
Just an update on some things I've tried...
There's only two things running on startup, and deselecting them still doesn't make a difference.
I've just started it up in safe mode with networking, and still no problems...had a couple of games of solitaire with no freezing.
Just started it up normally, and it froze after moving the first card. |

Yes, even then. I would try the spare RAM.
Of course, it may be something else, but RAM is a major cause of issues like these. |

I'm trying to get hold of a spare strip from work, but in the mean time I'm running MemTest86 (www.memtest86.com).
Have you ever run this before?
I ran it for about 3.5 hours last night, and it didn't come up with any errors (it hadn't finished though) but had to switch it off. This morning I looked in the configuration settings and then started it again and it immediately started counting errors, and it's still running (it's at home though, and I'm at work).
If you've used this before, do you know what settings I should change etc please, or do I just run it straight off? I had a quick look on their site, but didn't have time to read it through properly.

| That was a memory expansion and once removed the computer worked normally. A contact with the RAM's vendor tech support resulted in them informing me that the expansion was not compatible with the computer (even though it was specifically recommended for that model!). |

Ah I see.
Ok, I ran Memtest and it told me there was no errors (it's been running for 9 hours, I assume repeating the tests etc).
I've got hold of a piece of memory at work, so I've just put it into the PC...and still it freezes! Argh! I've tried each bit of memory in different memory slots, but still the same problem.
I ran msconfig, and on the system.ini tab, I disabled [drivers] and [driver32] but still the same.
The other options I have in system.ini are;
; for 16-bit app support
[mci]
[386enh]
I also told it to boot using "Diagnostic Startup - load basic devices and services only" but still the freezing occurs.
What I forgot to say is my hardrive is partitioned in two - 9.99GB with WinXP on, and 27.2GB which is blank
I'm going to attempt to install WinXP on one 40GB partition, and see if it works.
Any more suggestions 
EDIT - I just managed to install the drivers off the motherboard CD. It then restarted, but I was left with an off black screen. I tried to reboot into safe mode, but it didn't get any further than the command line reading something about partmgr.sys (I think it was that), so now I'm forced to format and reinstall Windows. How do I tell if the motherboard is faulty? |

I don't know any tools to test the motherboard. Maybe take it to the place where you've bought it?
Anyway you can always try an incremental approach. Start the computer with the bare minimum (hard disk, video card, RAM, CD/DVD and install Windows. Then remove the CD / DVD. If it works, try adding the CD / DVD and so on... |

It has the bare minimum on at the moment 
I'll have to contact PCChips and see if they can help anymore (haven't heard from them since my first email).
If I was building it for myself, I wouldn't mind as much, but when it's for someone else you feel like you're letting them down. |

You know, mortioli, if you're going to nuke & pave it anyway, you might think about creating a slipstreamed version of XP, you can take Sp2 and integrate it to the original install CD and create a new bootable CD just like the original, only it has Sp2 already installed...
