Is there a way I can limit the number ot times Reply With Quote can be used?
I have some posts where users are too lazy to click on Reply To Topic and just Reply With Quote to add a smiley to what someone said or just say "I agree".
Can I change things so that Reply With Quote cann be used more than once in a post? ie, You cannot Reply With Quote to someone who has Replied With Quote. |

Possibly, certainly, but it surely would give some work, since each reply would have to be analysed in order to find out whether the quote tag had been used and, if so, have the link disabled. Anyway, for someone who knows forum code, it would still be possible to reply with quote, just be copying text from the previous replies, and the use the quote tags.
For the above reason, I would set a policy advising users not to do it and penalise all that did it, instead of looking for a solution that would not prevent all the possible "quoting situations". |

Maybe I'm misreading your oroginal post, Buono but how is clicking reply w/ quote any quicker than clicking reply? You could turn on quick reply, if you haven't already, to try and make it easier for your members to post replies.
Preventing people from quoting posts that already quote another post could effect the fluidity of conversation on your forums for those who use quotes as originally intended.

Search is your friend “I was having a mildly paranoid day, mostly due to the fact that the mad priest lady from over the river had taken to nailing weasels to my front door again.” |

Well, look at this thread, for example. If you scroll your window so that only posts are shown, the Reply With Quote button is shown but not Reply To Topic or Quick Reply (which I have enabled).
So people use that because they do not have to scroll. |

Ah, getcha Are there really people out there that lazy?! You could add a reply to topic icon before the reply with quote one.

Line 644 of topic.asp,
You can duplicate the line and change the duplicate's method from: ReplyQuote to: Reply
and the text from: "Reply with Quote" to: "Reply to Topic"
and remove: REPLY_ID=" & Reply_ReplyID & "&
and Change the icon on the "reply with quote" from: strIconReplyTopic to: strIconFolderArchive
so basically you would have these two lines instead of the one:
Response.Write " <a href=""post.asp?" & ArchiveLink
& "method=ReplyQuote&REPLY_ID=" & Reply_ReplyID & "&TOPIC_ID=" &
Topic_ID & "&FORUM_ID=" & Forum_ID & """>" & getCurrentIcon
(strIconFolderArchive,"Reply with Quote","align=""absmiddle""
hspace=""6""") & "</a>" & vbNewLine
Response.Write " <a href=""post.asp?" & ArchiveLink
& "method=Reply&TOPIC_ID=" &
Topic_ID & "&FORUM_ID=" & Forum_ID & """>" & getCurrentIcon
(strIconReplyTopic,"Reply to Topic","align=""absmiddle""
hspace=""6""") & "</a>" & vbNewLine
I remove the spaces and wrapped the lines of the code above to stop horizontal scroll of this topic.
Only attempt this mode if you are comfortable with modifying your asp files!
Edit to include: You might also want to duplicate the above fix at line 847 (848 after mod) where the method is "topicquote". This affects the first topic.
Edit again: Typo |
