Okay, so I gave in yesterday and bought Half-Life˛ (wow, tiny 2 there). After an annoying installation procedure thanks to Steam, I got it running, but after only a few seconds into the game came across a bug that, apparently, many more are experiencing: fatal memory error.
So does anyone else have HL2? If so, did you run into this problem, and if so, how did you fix it? The supposed "fix" of setting every quality option for audio and video to the lowest didn't work for me
Also, what're the normal causes for fatal memory errors? Is it bad programming (they had more than enough time to get these things fixed IMO, but okay), or is it something in my computer that none of my other programs use? |

Did you get the update that was released a few days ago? I bought Half Life 2 for my wife. She hasn't encountered any problems with it yet. Bought it through steam and downloaded it, the update downloaded automatically yesterday or the day before. |

Don't know about the bug but I have to say, this is the one of the most amazing game I've ever played, and that includes Doom 3. I'm particularly impressed by the physics. Every interactive object has a real 'real' feel about it. Particularly noticeable when you get the Gravity Gun.
One word of advice though; don't play the Ravenshelm level at night. |

Steam is supposed to keep HL2 updated (I think something got downloaded through steam after I installed yesterday), and I've checked steampowered.com to see if I could download some kind of update there, but couldn't find anything. I did have the HL2 files validated to make sure they weren't corrupt.
So far I've been able to play for a whole 30 minutes at a time, but it keeps crashing. Hopefully they'll find a fix so I'll be able to set the texture qualities at least at medium. |

Nope, I'll give that a try tomorrow. I did install the latest ATI drivers and just played for almost an hour straight with the quality turned up to the recommended settings before it crashed, so that did seem to help a bit although the Catalyst Control Panel won't work. |

I've had nothing but great results with HL2. Steam worked just like it is supposed to and I've had no problems in the game, no lockups, nothing. I absolutly love the game. It's by far the best game i've ever played. I can't wait for HL3, which I hear is in the works. The physics are amazing, the graphics are stunning, and I think the storyline is great. Here's a good overview of the story line for those who don't know. http://members.shaw.ca/storage_4/hl2story/
The blue gravity gun in the end rules!! Can bust things off walls, pick up people and toss them, it's great.
As for my machine, i'm running my year old gaming rig. 2.4 gHz P4c, gig of OCZ pc3200, ati 9800 pro, dfi lanparty 875p motherboard. Works good. |

used to knock up deathmatch maps for HL1 with Worldcraft when it first came out. Now I've completed HL2 I cant seem to find any info on mapping for HL2 other than that Worldcraft is now called Hammer. |

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro ... I think (can't check that from work )
After messing with my computer for some time, and completely reinstalling HL2 and Steam (download from steampowered.com) everything seems to be working fairly well. I might have to go offline and kill my virus scanner's auto-update feature as that did seem to be the only time I got kicked out of HL2 yesterday after having played for two hours straight. I'm finally making progress now, at least I will as soon as I've done the annoying "buggy on the beach with aliens" part |

You'll miss that 'annoying' buggy. It's one of the best sections of the game, IMHO. |

I used to play TFC which was a mod for the original Half Life. That was the best online game I ever played, wasted hours of my life on that. I can only hope there will be a TFC2 mod or official game. |
