Ok... say I just installed a program that I dont want anybody else to have access to. (I'm the administrator... 2 normal users I dont want to have access to this proggy)
Normally I dont have a problem with this, because I dont really hide any programs from anyone, and I dont really wanna hide this one, I just wanna make it so it runs on startup for ME, but not anyone else...
is there any way to control this? currently it runs on startup for everyone, and that dosnt work out too well because its an e-mail notifier, and I'm the only one in the house with an email account associated with it, so I dont want it to pop up saying "user/pass" u know? |

I thought when you install a program on XP it asks if you want to make it available for just you or everyone. did you get that option? |

remove the shortcut or application from this location:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
and put it here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Profile\Start Menu\Programs\Startup |

dayve, its not there. I dont have a problem with a shorcut being there, cuz they just ignore stuff that isnt theirs...
I need to stop the application from starting automatically when they log in... I've looked in each profiles documents and settings\xuserx\start menu\startup and havnt found it. From what I can tell its a global thing....
if I go to start->Run->msconfig I can change the startup, but I cant be selective per user... |

you can disable the item from msconfig since it is probably a registry item that is starting it up in all profiles and then take the location of the file and stick a shortcut of the item exclusively in your startup folder. |

Not all programs offer that option Nikkol. It's up to the programmers to offer that option. |

I guess you could block access to that program using policies? Proper secure, that way - only administrtators can run the code... |

that's an entirely different avenue of access control. one I did not want to get into because he wanted something simplistic. you can control security of an application in a multitude of ways, he just wanted to prevent the application from starting up for another logged on user. |

ok - just threw it in there so any passing readers would know there is front-end (weak) security (security by obscurity, in effect), and hardcore back-end security all for free with their copy of XP...unlike with win 98 etc!!! |
