well a little break from the computing world (about the most offtopic topic here methinks)... for the past (very boring) week I've been having an argument over which is better- punk or rock. it dragged on a little and neither of us would back down so we decided to see which everyone else thought was the best to lay this to rest once and for all. sadly im losing drastically (supporting rock) so, as a last resort i decided to bring it here - guessing most of you would have grown up listening to rock (by rock i mean Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Aerosmith etc)
so which is it to be? (if you don't like either jst say rock ) |

I grew up listening to both. They both have there merits in my book, but then I have a pretty eclectic taste in music. I was 14 when I saw the Sex Pistols (performing under a different name at the time for various reasons) and for a bored kid at a stuffy Grammar School punk was a breath of fresh air. Best band I've seen however are Pink Floyd both with and without Roger Waters. Best concert by far was The Wall performed Live in Berlin, an utterly mind blowing experience. |

Okay, to offset the rock landslide, I'll say punk. I like both but Fugazi deserves special mention. Always $5, all ages shows and plus great songs. Few musicians stick to their principles over time but the guys from Fugazi are one of them, I think. CDs are $10-12 postage paid. I wish all music were so good and affordable.
I should mention that I must be getting old now since I mostly listen to acoustic guitar music exclusively. |

Punk is just not entertaining to me. Rock is way better. Punk is more about the appearance and lifestyle than the music. |

I'd have to vote rock as well. I didn't grow up on it, I'm almost too young to, but I like rock over punk. I've started enjoying rock in my more recent years. |

it isn't a band. It is an album by Pink Floyd, it was performed by Roger Waters and many others (Bryan Adams,Paul Carrack, Thomas Dolby, Scorpions, Van Morrison, Snowy White, Andy Fairweather Low and a few others) in Potsdammer Platz (was a minefield between east and west Berlin) on the 21st of July 1990. |

The wall is a very good album. I sugest everyone listen to it.
Jesmeister - I am sure rock is loosing since the age group of the people you probley talk to. The new generation of youth would rather punk I believe because that is what everyone else listen's to that they are around. |

I would agree with Brad, I would imagine most people would not have heard of most of the punk I listened to in my youth, other than the Sex Pistols. |

Yes, it's got to be the demographics of your polled audience. If you judge by commercial success, rock has got to win hands down. |

I doubt it, since rock still goes strong, punk as a music genre has been dead for many years, what kids listen to now is not punk, plus as taropatch mentions if you judge it by commercial success then by definition Punk can never win as it would not be punk if it did. |
