What do you do at your forums to prevent multiple topics about the same subject?
I added in bold and red (in post.asp) the following:
Before posting a new topic make sure youīve performed a search first ! Multiple topics about the same subject are not allowed !
But often itīs not enough! I would not like to moderate my forum, but maybe itīs necessary. What would be cool was having the forum search for the subject and give an error if someone tries to post a new topic which has already been started, but I guess it would slow down the new topic posting!? |

not a lot you can do other than delete them. People are not supposed to do that here either, but unfortunately the majority of people either don't know what search means or are just to lazy to use it. |

I lock them and link to the topic they should have found themselves.
Iīm thinking of adding a page before post.asp - so itīs even more clear to them that they have to search first. |

"Lock and dock" ... lock the thread, dock off a few off their post count. It's a long standing rule to try to get people to think a bit more before posting, AND it stops people posting just to get their count up. Normally a warning for the first 1-2 posts; then docking them 6 (5 plus the offending post); increasing to 10 if they have trouble learning |

Actually, I donīt think the postcount has nothing to do with this (at least at one of my forums), basically I believe people are just lazy. I had to warn and delete 1-2 members because of this. Iīm really considering adding another page between topic.asp and post.asp to make sure people read the rules before adding a new topic. It would just be interesting to hear what people are doing about this problem. |

It's not really too much of a problem around my forum I guess. Of course the obvious topics are locked, but a lot of situations people have are all unique. If there is something though, members usually link them to the topic with information. |

Well, my largest forum is about music, imagine having 50 different topics about each band !? That kind is not allowed, but people seem to ignore it more often than Iīm satisfied with. Itīs actually one of the only rules we have, for the simple reason that it would be impossible to carry on a discussion about a band if there are many different topics about it. |

Perhaps if "search" is that important to your forum, a search link should be placed outside of upper right hand navigation menu? That is, make it easier for people to see and more evident that they should use it regularly?
Outside of saying it and then making it clear and easy to use, I'm not sure really what can be done. |

Oh yes, Search is clearly marked - even on the text in red in the post form, the word Search is a link to the Search page. |

The search-before-post thing sounds rather interesting I believe. My first thought while reading this topic was that the post button on post.asp would post the new subject to a modified search.asp instead of post_info.asp which would only pop-up a little window saying "Your topic matches 54 found topics - Do you (link)still want to post(/link) or rather (link)read them first(/link)?" The first link would link to searrch.asp by posting the subject again, the second one post just regulary to post_info.asp.
It would not slow the forums down as that's exactly what you want your users to do anyways - performing search first...
Hope it wasn't to confusing, to me it souds quite simple.
