No sooner do I have finished all the asp pages on my site than I find a web server I just HAVE TO switch to, and he doesn't support asp!
I don't know php yet, but will learn it soon.
Meanwhile, is there anything anyone can think of that can be done?

No one HAS to switch What's the problem ?? If I were you I wouldn't go throwing away all that custom ASP code & knowledge and starting over again.

www.php.net

And you can start prowling hotscripts.com for php applications that will replace all your asp applications.

PHP is a pretty simple and straighforward language. I'd say I like ASP better though, the syntax just seems cleaner to me with ASP, vs using { and } for block statements and ending statements with a ; in PHP. PHP has similar syntax like many other languages, C++, C#, PERL, Java, JavaScript, and so on, so it's not a bad language at all to learn, it will only help increase your understanding in the long run.

IMHO, I think we need to look at it from Alfred's POV. He's spent a lot of time & effort mastering ASP, his site is VERY customised, he's had stacks of help from various people on this forum - I applaud him for getting as far as he has. I just think dumping ASP (& Access) and moving to PHP (& mySQL?) is a bad idea given his circumstances.

Of course. I wouldn't make a switch over to php from asp. If I were switching over, first thing I'd consider is Python, and then asp.net platform. I like python because it has clean block statements with a simple indent to indicate the start of a block statement. But, it never does any harm to learn other languages. These days it doesn't cost as much to operate asp on windows as it did a few years ago. You can get by pretty cheap. I'd stick with the asp if you can, but learn the other languages anyways.

I had wanted to learn php and mySql for a long time already, because I am planning a commercial site that may need it.
And like you say, it never hurts learning more.

The reason I just HAVE TO switch servers is that it is a deal I simply can't refuse.
For the last two years I paid $240 for 75 Mb space, just lately increased to 100 Mb. Still a joke compared to the 2 years of 5 megs I can get for $95.00.
Imagine:
100Mb for $240.00 or:
5000Mb for $ 95.00!

That's enough incentive for me to learn php!
However, I can't learn it over night.

Talk to Gremlin, but those prices are insane. *nix servers will always be cheaper, however.

Another way to lower your costs - Google ads. Put them somewhere "nice" on your forum pages, people will click on them, you will make money.

I agree, the pricing for what you get sounds kinda, so two years ago. I'd look at hosting elsewhere. There are some good deals out there.

Maybe you should start wandering around some of the PHP forums and see what kind of response you get when you ask for help.

I know that one of the reasons I'm working with ASP and not ColdFusion is that the people here were so friendly and the CF resources were so paltry.

At the end of the day what are you actually ever going to do with 5000MB anyway? ... and don't forget you'll need a backup strategy which may see you needing to download all that data every now and then too :)

I'll echo the statements of the others here as well, you've put a lot of effort into ASP I'd stick with it .. you'd be really annoyed if in 3 months time you see another "deal" on a Windows host for more space and less money and have to go convert all again (though most hosts will let you run ASP and/or PHP on Windows anyway).

I'd check for any fine-print on that new host as well and make sure theres no catches and that they have a reasonable reputation before diving in.

Alfred,

That is not a good reason to switch from an ASP host to a non-ASP host. There are a heap of ASP hosts out there that are quite cheap and reliable.

Take Gremlins company for a starter, and if you want something in the USA, then I can direct you to a host that does ASP hosting for $US99 for the year, with 550Mb space and 40Gb traffic a month. Then if you another site for your business and want to take up that offer, then go for it.

The only thing you need to watch is how long are they going to be about? 6 months or 60 years, I would go by what they are offering it wont be the 60 years.

And why would you need 5Gb storage anyway unless you run a pornographic site and then in that case you would host it all yourself any way to make sure it was up all the time.

Ultimately, it is up to you Alfred on what you do, but why throw away all the good and hard work you have done over the years you have been coming to this site to save a couple of dollars when it will cost you more in the end?

Cheers,

David Greening

I am sure all the advice is well-meant, and similar to what I would say if asked. At least in principle.
I have planned all along to build a commercial site eventually, because I lost my business that I built for 10 years as a result of 9/11, and have no income now.
The game site was a training exercise, and the commercial site will have to be totally database driven. I want to be prepared for success, and was lead to believe that mySql and php would be a good marriage.
Certainly one can't hope to find another support group like this one anywhere, and I will simply have to bite the bullet and learn as well as I can to figure things out for myself.
As far as "saving a couple of bucks" is concerned, sorry - I see it a bit different. I made myself an Excel sheet with all the features of a dozen of the best values out there, and there simply is nobody that gets close to this offer.
Imagine - 5 gigs for half of what I pay now for 100 Megs!
They just expanded into a lot of new capacity, and probably rather give you a deal than have it sit idle.
And space is what I will need for success in what I plan to build.
Each customer will get his own site, with graphics, and database for bookkeeping chores.
I am told that php is pretty similar to asp, except it does not tie you to Mr. Gates.
Just wish me luck.

Personal opinion only but I think you'll find PHP a lot harder than ASP/vbScript is, you will have to relearn pretty much everything & learn a new database as well becuase you'll not be using Access any more.

How much bandwidth are they giving you with that 5GB of storage Alfred, you might find yourself trapped with high bandwidth charges if its not in line with the disk space.

Remember HD space is cheap and I'm sure you can find a windows host that is able to offer quite the same; take a look at Reddi-Web for example, from the standard plan up there are no restrictions on webspace.
Also, don't forget that if you offer that much data you'll have a lot of traffic, and this can make it a lot more expensive (as Gremlin said).
And don't let the number of features fool you, the only thing that counts is features you really need. Think about that.
