Alfred,
I think you might want to also factor the new host's system reliability, financial stability into your selection process.
No offence intended, but I also think you'd be better off asking a professional to build your site for you whatever route you go. If trouble happens to your site, you'll want someone who'll be able to fix things immediately. That's not the time to go into a PHP forum and asking for help. After all it's going to be a business, not a hobby right?

Yes, but that is pretty intangible, and not easily assessed as the numbers data.quote: No offence intended, but I also think you'd be better off asking a professional to build your site for you whatever route you go.
No offense taken at all, this is good advice, and something I have considered as well. However, I do want to be self-sufficient eventually, and emergency may be a good incentive.

That is true, but I want to have it all click flawlessly before I market my service. I know I will need to get comprehensive documentation and reference material for php. |

quote: take a look at Reddi-Web for example, from the standard plan up there are no restrictions on webspace
Hi Mule! ReddiWeb looks pretty competitive allright, although not quite cutting it:
Mine: ---------------------------------------------- $3.95/month 5 GB of Web Space 20GB Bandwidth Ensim Control Panel No Setup Fee 5000 Pop3 Accounts Webmail FTP Access 5 Subdomains (http://something.yourdomain.com) Cgi, PHP, perl, etc. Front page Support Static IP 30 Day Money Back Guarantee =====================================================================
ReddiWeb: ------------------------------------------------ 6.25/month for 250MB space £10 per month for each extra 10Gb £10 per month for Dedicated IP (required for SSL) over $26.25/month! or: £20/month unrestricted web space, 10GB bandwidth. £40/month unrestricted web space, 20GB bandwidth, dedicated IP. deduct 10% for prepayment, and you still pay £36 not $ but pounds! =====================================================================
At about 10 times my cost - do you see what a deal I am talking about? Hard to resist!

That is about the only thing that worries me, that it sounds too good to be true. But if it IS true...? One way to find out is to try it. I have no doubt that Huw's service is very good, but I had a bad experience with it last year. I actually subscribed, and transferred a years' prepayment to London. When I got no response for a couple of days I left mail for Huw, which never got answered. Eventually I found out that my payment had been returned, without reason given. It cost me fees for two transfers and currency fluctuation against me. In consideration of who it was I did not follow up any further, but it was obviously something I would not have taken without comment from any stranger. |

Alfred, believe me when I say, IT'S A COMPLETE JOKE! I've been there, done that. Personally I don't use hosts that cost any less than $10 - $15 USD a month, it just doesn't pay. Thier a complete joke for what they say you get. It's terrible slow, and if you use any cpu cycles at all or bandwidth it's like they just totally delete your site. I know, it's happened to me. I used 2 gigs in a day once (had some videos up) with my "unlimited" bandwidth account I got when I signed up for some $60 a year and they up and deleted my website because "I was abusing thier policy and monopolizing the bandwidth". Not even as much as a notice. What a joke. Not to mention, the service was terrible, everything was way slow.
Don't focus on all the glitter and eye candy that some of these guys try throw at you, look for what you need, and make sure the people doing it are dedicated and care about you. If you think about it, there's possibly NO chance a host can survive making less than $4 a month off of you, and still give a good level of service, along with keeping to what they state they offer. It just can't happen, there is way too much cost involved.
Having a website is a hobby for most, a cheap one at that. How many people do you know that can do thier hobby with $10 a month? |

Guys, since we're going around in circles a bit, I'll re-port my earlier advice :
"Talk to Gremlin"
Read my post here from a while ago : http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=44072
Go Kiwi !!, I have referred several sites to Gremlin, and you might be surprised about the number of names from this forum that uses his services. Service and support is always excellent. Starting from initial contact when he hand-crafted a hosting plan to suit the requirements listed in my thread. |

Since this conversation is turning into a comparison of hosting offers I'm locking it. Alfred, start another thread if you want to pursue more on the differences from asp to php.
