We've been running this forum for a couple of years. Gremlin has helped on it. (Thanks Gremlin! )
Compared to other forums this one has heavy usage and it is divided into very few subtopics. There's a main topic, chat, and a small private forum.
Most of the fora I see have a zillion subtopics and light usage. This one is exactly opposite that. It works fine. It may be an interesting point of comparison for folks trying to determine how many subtopics to build into their fora.
Remember, you can easily add subtopics, but you can't easily get rid of them.
Looks good! One thing I'd recommend is changing the folder icons with ones that match your site's colors. Another suggestion, you might want to try my Limit Quick Paging code, I noticed the paging of topics with more than 10 replied doesn't look that good.
I agree, I've seen many boards that have numerous forums (sometimes more than 20!) but very few posts. Especially when you start a forum, you should keep the number of forums low and add more forums later if needed.
I had someone comment on my forum (in which I created many categories and forums on launch to give my pending users lots of options) as a house with too many empty rooms.
I agree. A few core cats and fora, and let it grow organically.
