About 20 percent of all Windows-based computers still run Windows 95 or 98, according to International Data Corp., a technology market research firm. Support for Windows 95 stopped Dec. 31, 2001.

People whose machines run Windows 98 will not be able to call Microsoft for help after Jan. 16 2004. Online assistance will still be available.

I agree with MS to stop support. They can not continue to train techs to support win98 when I believe alot of the bugs have been fixed in the new versions. They supported the software for 5 years.

yep, fix one bug and create two more. The thing I like is that from what I remember Win98 did not have a Windows Update which was a great addon

I'm happy; Win98 has never liked me.

I don't know if it's just that the machines re underpowered, but every time I get on a W98 box EXPLORER.EXE crashes. In 2K/XP+ that's not a problem (It's only happened a few times to me on a 2K/XP box), you just go to the task manager and restart it. On Win98, you have to reboot.

You probably should proceed with it anyway (and before the 31st December). Just MHO.

I'd say if you have less than 128MB ram and a 16MB video card; you won't like XP much.

You can go to Win2K though.

I'd recommend 256MB ram and a 64MB video card if you want XP to run 'well' though.

here, here

Though I would disagree that you need a 64Mb graphics card for XP, but definately, any windows version you should consider 256Mb as a minimum for your ram, even for windows 98. The improvements on performance that adequate ram makes are huge.

I'm always surprised by those who'll "chase" the processor speed, yet put minimal RAM in them...

I typically stay one generation behind on CPU speed and spend the savings on RAM... Much better combination, IMO...
