it seems favicon.com has gone to the dogs, but the following link is free no-registration-required simple editor:

http://artcontext.org/act/02/collabyrinth/docs/index.php

btw, the designer of the site above neglected to put in a scrollbar, so you need beef up your screen resolution above 1024x768 to access the download button.

I like favicons, and this looked like a nice tool.

But, they seem to disappear.
From what I understand the first time you save a site to a favorite it will also save the favicon as a cookie. If you delete your cookies, then the favicon is gone too. The only way to get it back is to re-save the link as a favorite again.

Is that close to what happens? If so, how would anyone know that is why the cute little logo you spent so much time designing is gone?

I gave up on favicons, nice idea but they seem to have a mind of their own!

not reliable in Internet Explorer, but Firebird seems to do fine with them. I think that Internet Explorer would do better if it wasn't looking in the Temporary Internet Files for the icon, instead it should always try to get the file from the website.

putting:
<LINK href="http://www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico" type=image/x-icon rel="shortcut icon">
in the <head> section of your document does help.

like you said, it is hit & miss though. For example, i have snitz.com bookmarked yet the favicon doesnt display in the address bar, but it does display in the Links toolbar. (ie6)
