I've heard about that: If your server works for website running only(no need to act as LAN/print.... server), you can buy windows 2003 server it self, without buying CALs.
If SQL server's usage is website database only, what SQL server combination (including licence?) should buy ?
And the street price is ? (educational price)
Thanks! |

I am thinking of buying 2003 Web Server because it is extremely cheap right now, but it does not have all the benefits of a real 2003 server (obviously). However, it still sounds enticing.
quote:
Limitations Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, is designed specifically for dedicated Web serving needs, and its functionality has certain limitations as follows:
Although computers running Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, can be members of a Microsoft Active Directory® service domain, Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, cannot be a domain controller. Consequently, organizations cannot use Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, alone to apply certain management features, including Group Policy, Software Restriction Policies, Remote Installation Services, Microsoft Metadirectory Services, Internet Authentication Service (IAS), and others. Organizations cannot use Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, to deploy enterprise Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) services. UDDI is an essential component for enabling discovery and reuse of XML Web services. Organizations cannot use Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, to deploy Microsoft SQL Server™.

I was looking into this when looking for a dedicated server for the forum. It used Win2003 Web Edition. What are the legalities in using MSDE on a live site though? Is it allowed? |

In the link I posted above, Microsoft explicitly states that that is the free version of SQL Server. I didn't look for the License Agreement, but I had never seen such wording regarding MSDE before. Also, the previous MSDE version was set to diminish performance after 5 simultaneous connections, this one has 25 as a limit. Looks like MS is being more aggressive with their software, specially where they have competition. I had seem the same attitude elsewhere, so this looks a promising development. |

I think MSDE also has a 2 gig limit. I don't think I'd ever use MSDE for any serious development, but that is just me. |

Does the 2003 Web server license prevent you from using MySQL instead of MS-SQL? If not, then that might be one way to go.

I don't see why it would, but then again, look at who we're talking about.. Microsoft.
We should have known he'd be a criminal from the start! |

Yeah, that limit remains. 2 Gig looks like a reasonable limit for most sites, I'd say. |

Means 25 simultaneous connections to the database.
A standard Snitz forum should use at most about 3-6 connections depending what it is doing. |

Is this per database though? Or is it 2 gigs max for all databases while using MSDE? |

That MSDE is looking like an actual alternative to Access. Now hosts will have to support it of course.
The good news is that moving from that to MS SQL *should* be a lot less problematic than from Access to SQL Server. |

Why would it be any different? |
