So, I set up a wireless network at my mom's house, and I'm tempted to leave it open for 'public' access. There are like 5 houses max within the routers 1500 foot range, and we know all the owners.
My only worry is that if they use our bandwidth for illegal activities, are we liable for what they do? |

what kind of wireless network is going to cover a 1500 foot range (unless you plan on mounting your wireless access point outside with a signal booster) ? I would not go public and if you do, please give me your address so I can park outside with my laptop  |

dayve has good point. You may be able to totally trust the neighbors but you have to think about the "war drivers". You could set the network and give you friends an account.
Even with an external antenna can you get better than about 600 feet?

| we have one at work set up as a bridge. i'm a really bad judge of distance, but i'm sure it isn't more than 600 ft. the antenna is a pretty cheap omnidirectional though. |

there are signal boosters you can purchase fairly cheap. I have one but it is only used indoors. I think Linksys claims 1500 feet for outside use, but I seriously doubt it.
if you are going to use it for public use, then just turn on WEP and you should be safe from potential freeloaders. |

We get about 1500 feet with our regular D-Link router. We are going to buy a signal booster 2db to 15db so we can reach the other house. (We have two houses about 2200 ft apart)
I like sufing the unprotected wi-fi spots around Seattle, its kinda fun. |

| Chuck a 19db aerial or more on your roof and you can easily get a couple of Km's I'm going to be setting a wireless node up here next year as part of a small project to try and cover most of the city with a wireless, hopefully we'll eventually have sponsored internet access on the network as well. |

I was driving down I5 a few days ago, about 80 miles north of Seattle out in the boonies. I came across an open wireless so strong I was able to get of an email and make several posts here . . . at nearly 85 MPH
I was quite impressed, that was the biggest hotspot I've ever hit. |

LOL,  Yeah, my dad was doing the acutal driving part.
I use 'driving' interchangably with being a passenger. |

| Is this something hard to setup for a small community to all get wireless internet? My parents live in a small community (about 1 square mile with about 25 houses). They live out in the middle of nowhere and everytime I goto their house I get frustrated with dial up internet. |
