I am wondering if anyone uses comcast internet to host their site on their home computer and if so how they do it?
I ask because it seems that my site will not run as good as I want it to on anything but a dedicated server. I figured I have this computer laying around not earning rent so why not? Any help, input, or advice would be appreciated. |

I use Comcast to host my forum and have had great success with it. I have it on a dedicated Pentium /// 750mhz server with 1 GIG of ram. I am running the web server, sql server and mail server all on the same box which I was worried about at first, but it has held up just fine for the past 2 years. I wish my speeds were better, but no one complains and I've made accomodations for those with dialup to customize their settings to make their experience faster and more enjoyable.
Things to consider, hardware firewall (I prefer this over a software version), active virus scanning, disaster recovery plan, blah, blah, blah.... all the important admin stuff that comes along with running something like this from your home.
If you do use comcast, your ip address may change every few months. I'd strongly consider using something like DNS2GO which has worked out very nicely for me these past years gone by. No complaints whatsoever. |

if performance is an issue, then hosting from home is not that good an option unless you have a huge connection, don't forget most hosting companies have 100Mb or 1Gb pipes, your home connection is going to be 1/2 or 1Mb at the most. |

mmh, if I am reading correctly at comcast.com I wouldn't even consider to host from such a connection:
quote: With Comcast High-Speed Internet Pro you can cruise through your work without having to wait. Downloads are up to 3.5 Mbps - that's up to 5.5 times faster than DSL.* Uploads are up to 384 Kbps - up to 3 times faster than DSL.* And since you're always connected, you won't even have to wait to get online. You'll just wake up, turn on your computer and get to work.
But, hey, that's just my opinion, I'm using cable with the same downstream but with only 128 kbps upstream, so I haven't considered even for a fraction of a second to host from home. That's why I got to my current provider who delivers (shared) hosting using a OC3 connection.

but you are dedicated from home whereas with a host I've seen servers loaded up with almost 200 websites. |

yepz, your right dayve...my previous server for oxle.com hosted 1096 sites on one (!) server. The best is still to get dedicated hosting, but that costs a lot more money. |

Thanks for the input guys... Currently I am talking with Huwr about hosting since I have a lot more to learn about doing this from home yet. I still have some questions for him but so far it's looking good. I visited what appeared to be an Image forum and a stripped down SHNforum both on his servers and they worked very well. SO hopefully I will have a place to park the forums soon.
I will be asking you some more questions a little later Dayve... Like after the holidays if thats alright with you. |

wow thats a lot of domains on one server :)
I've seen machines performing well with several hundred though, comes down to specs of the machines, 2GB Dual Xeon2.4's with 15k SCSI's run well :) |

Wow!, that is just a ridiculous amount. I wouldn't recomend more than 100 and even then they should only be basic websites without data access, even a dual proc with heaps of ram will not host that many data driven asp sites without a struggle. |

HuwR, go tell that to the people at fasthost.co.uk...they think it cán work...Okay, most of the sites they host are small business sites, using plain HTML and very little information (let alone very little pageviews per site per day), but still. |
