Inside out!?!? What are those? I had regular Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and even Reese's sticks. Must go investigate.
Not nearly as good as the originals. Seemed goofy to me.

Yeah, me too. Not doing well with the minority bit, but it's kinda hard when you're living right near chocolatetown USA (hershey PA) and one of your kids favorite places to visit is ChocolateWorld.
Oh well, time to go back on Atkins.... |

Nearly 1/3 of us are obese.
My problem with those stats are the basis they use for it. According to the Height/Weight scale, I should weigh between 172-197 pounds (6'2" with the large frame). At my best weight, the lowest I have EVER been was 245, and I definitely didn't have another 50 pounds I could lose (IIRC, my %fat was about 6.5%). I just had a higher muscle density than most people my size. I had a friend whose waist was eight inches larger than mine - I outweighed him by 40 pounds.
There is NO WAY I could ever get down to my "ideal" weight w/o cutting off an arm or leg. Just impossible. Am I saying I'm thin? absolutely not. But the height/weight charts are ridiculous and should really be adjusted to the current times. People are just bigger than they were 10 or 20 years ago.
The BMI indexes are probably a better indication of overweightness (is that a word?) |

Exactly what I was going to say Dave. Times change, things need to be updated. Sure, a lot of people are heavy but is that average now? |

All kidding aside, the Colorado population is extremely active and fitness-conscious, much more so than average imho. I lived in Colorado for over 20 years myself.

Bah, y'all are missing the point.
The whole thing is a scheme to boulster the tourist industry. Americans are hopeing rich people from other parts of the world will pay to come see them waddle around everywhere they go. Quite entertaining.
**Disclamer, this post is designed only to be humous, don't try to read into it because there is nothing to read. |

From http://www.thehungersite.com/ :
quote:
In 1999, a year marked by good economic news, 31 million Americans were food insecure, meaning they were either hungry or unsure of where their next meal would come from. Of these Americans, 12 million were children.
Without any comment, and no offence to American life-style intended.

No offense, but it's not our problem that the governments of those countries won't let our food in to feed those nations. They just let it sit, rotting in port. |

Yeah, that's why I highlighted that 1/3 of us are obese (since that stat is based on BMI). I work in a school district and our nurse told us last year that if the rate of "overweightness" in American children keeps increasing like it is now, that by the time today's Kindergarteners are adults, nearly 100% of them will have diabetes.
Now, her stats are based on the medical profession's studies, so take them however you want. But I do think that, by enlarge (no pun, okay, pun intended) that our eating habits in this country have gone way downhill. This includes me ... my eating habits are horrible. Not even sure when the last time I had a fresh piece of fruit. (oh, so sad.) |

hehe...I'm thinking of Deuce Bigalow.
It's all a matter of lifestyle and it isn't just Americans. Young urban Chinese have an obesity problem and I'm not sure which countries China may be exploiting to receive those goods to consume as someone claimed America does.
It's a problem all over the world in developed and developing countries. It was just America that it caught up with first. It's happening everywhere in Europe as well as weight average increases each year.
Dave, you said you don't believe the numbers because of your experience. You probably know, but muscle weighs more than fat. No one considers someone built like a block to be overweight although they weigh more - I'm not sure that's so healthy though. But, you shouldn't worry if your mass is muscle and not fat.
Has anyone seen the commercial by Nike with the couch?
I think I'll exercise tomorrow too.

I'm inclined to agree. I'm seeing more overweight people here in Japan too, but the US seems to leading the trend. |

You should have met the doctor I went to once who told me I needed to lose weight before she even examined me (went strictly by my weight - hadn't even looked up from the chart at me yet). She told me I was 50lbs over my ideal maximum weight. I told her to check my body fat and tell me where I could lose it. I've never seen a doctor sputter more trying to backpedal after that.
Nowadays, she'd have a point, but not then. |

When doing those stats... they take into account averages of body weight and bone mass and unusualy heavy muscle mass.. and they figure in a standard variance... yada yada yada...
It's not that far off from actual people... and the thing wiht what you are saying... the oposite is true... there is probably an equal number of people whose frame/muscle mass that make them fall in the non-overweight class, but in fact are ;)
It's all fluid... but the point is true. :)
It's like saying that people from a particular country "stink"... but people from that country think you "stink"... and it's very true... people who's base diet is fish stink to me... but my diet and those I live arround eat beef primarly, and we smell different... it's a fact :)
Most citizens of the United States are over weight. And a majority of the people who are over weight are obese :(
I'm not obese... but I'm like 5'9" and weigh 180 lbs... and I feel a bit overweight (i.e. I can feel myself not feeling as good as I did at 165-175), and am kinda startled into eating a little less on average... try to avoid getting bigger |
