Then again, maybe it's a realization that one particular point in the American way of life needs reconsideration.

This applies for ALL countries. No one country is perfect. Given the choice, I'd rather be fat and free than skinny and not free as you see in other countries. This does not mean I don't think obesity is an issue. I guess this topic just seemed deragatory towards American lifestyle to me at first. I spent a lot of time in Japan (mostly Yokosuka) and believe me, there are a lot of things I can point out that I find appauling about their culture, but I understand that it is their culture and way of lifestyle.

Yes, it is tough to argue that America does not have a weight problem. Poor diet and too much time in front of the TV and computer... especially children.

On the other hand, people are a lot more conscious of cholesterol and fat than when I was a little kid. Of course now there is an entire generation taking cholesterol reducing drugs and eating whatever they want... or going Atkins diet and eating really badly.

What's my point? None really. Just some observations. I'm working out tomorrow.

Very true... we can't say anything about anyone but ourselves ;) and thats that... no one else is tolerant or accepting enouph to take critisism from what i have seen... but the truth of this is we are in fact a large people... and it's by choice... I think it is slowly changing though... more and more people are getting fed up with life... and starting to make permanent changes to their diets... and exersise... it's quite a neat time to be here ;) to see these kinds of changes...

On another note... the same applies to budgets... a lot of people are cuting up their Credit Cards in the US... and working on getting out of debt... and slowly we're all getting to a point where we are spending real money... and not just credit ;)

Americans are perpetually in denial. How an observation like "Americans are more overweight" than citizens of most other countries turned into "dissing" America is a sign of the dismissal of reality that most Americans pursue, aided by the great TV wasteland.

About TV, Newton Minnow hit the nail on the head years ago.

Face it, American's are fat because American's don't mind exploiting the entire worlds resources for America only. We overindulge, overconsume, and generally overuse what's available. IMHO a lot of the world's problems are caused by the fact that America does this overconsumption at the expense of most of the the rest of the world's population.

Doug, no one on this thread has disagreed with you :)

However, the comment about Americans not being able to say anything about anyone else is true... :) If we do, we are bigots and slew of other bad phrases and words :) it's just the truth... and for even saying that we can't say anyting, we get slamed for saying that by our own citizens... it doesn't matter if what is said is true or not.

I'm watching my parents grow old and fat. I'm also watching my Dad take several drugs that help keep that old and fat life from finally catching up with him.

Dayve, I know that you're only kidding. No disrespect intended, but I'm much rather that my parents be slimmer and on fewer drugs.

Dayve, I'm an American too. I never intended to insult the US lifestyle. I'm actually hoping to transfer back to the US and get back to that lifestyle.

The fat comment is what I see as a hard reality of American life. I guess going back home and seeing it really brought it into focus.

As for Japan not being perfect, you have no complaint from me there. I bet that my list of stupid things the Japanese do is FAR longer than your list of stupid things the Japanese do. I've got tons to complain about there.

Strange topic...

I lived some time in Colorado, and all my friends back then and most of the people I met were not more fat than here in Denmark - sure, this was 10 years ago, and maybe this has changed, but you can´t generalize like that.

people ... it really ISN'T a generalization. take a look at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/overwt.htm

Sixty-four percent of U.S. Adults are overweight or obese. (1999-2000)
Thirty percent of U.S. Adults are obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30.0). (1999-2000)

Nearly 1/3 of us are obese.

Inside out!?!? What are those? I had regular Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and even Reese's sticks. Must go investigate.

Proud to be a chocolate supporting American... while attempting to remain in the non-overweight/obese minority.
